Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM), established in 1903, is the largest medical school in the United States, with nine campuses across Indiana, including its principal campus in Indianapolis. The school comprises 25 academic departments—five in basic sciences and 20 in clinical sciences—and offers a four-year, fully accredited MD program. IUSM is affiliated with major hospitals such as IU Health Methodist Hospital, IU Health University Hospital, Riley Hospital for Children, and the Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical Center. The school is also home to the Melvin and Bren Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center, an NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center. In 2023, IUSM received over $243 million in NIH funding, ranking 29th among U.S. medical schools.
IUSM’s MD curriculum is structured into three phases over four years, integrating basic sciences with clinical experiences. Phase 1 (Years 1–2) focuses on foundational sciences and clinical skills, including courses like Human Structure and Molecules to Cells and Tissues. Phase 2 (Year 3) involves core clinical clerkships across various specialties, while Phase 3 (Year 4) emphasizes advanced clinical learning and residency preparation. Students have opportunities to engage in Scholarly Concentrations, allowing exploration of specific interests such as public health, biomedical research, or rural health.
IUSM’s facilities span its nine campuses, offering diverse environments for medical education. The Indianapolis campus features the Van Nuys Medical Science Building, housing laboratories and research spaces, and the Eugene and Marilyn Glick Eye Institute, providing ophthalmology services and research opportunities. The Bloomington campus includes the Regional Academic Health Center with state-of-the-art labs and learning spaces. Other campuses, such as Evansville’s Stone Family Center for Health Sciences and West Lafayette’s Lyles-Porter Hall, offer modern classrooms, study areas, and simulation centers to support student learning.
As of 2023, IUSM enrolls 1,461 MD students, 195 PhD students, and 1,442 residents and fellows. The faculty comprises 3,392 full-time and 253 part-time members. The school employs a holistic admissions process, considering academic performance, character, and life experiences. IUSM is committed to diversity and inclusion, striving to reflect the demographics of the communities it serves.
