The Max Rady College of Medicine, established in 1883 as the Manitoba Medical College, is Western Canada's first medical school. It is part of the University of Manitoba's Rady Faculty of Health Sciences and is located on the Bannatyne campus in Winnipeg. The college comprises 27 academic departments, institutes, and administrative units, offering a comprehensive range of medical education and research opportunities.
The college's curriculum emphasizes inclusivity and diversity, integrating Indigenous health perspectives and addressing health disparities. The Indigenous Health Longitudinal Course, developed by Dr. Barry Lavallee and Linda Diffey, provides students with the skills to work effectively with Indigenous populations. A unique feature of this curriculum is the Human Library, where first-year medical students engage directly with Indigenous community members to learn about their lives and health experiences.
The college offers a range of facilities to support medical education and research. These include histology and electron microscopy services through affiliated hospital pathology departments, as well as comprehensive animal care services for both small and large animals. Animal imaging services available encompass optical imaging, micro-CT, micro-PET, 7 Tesla MRI, PET-MRI, and ultrasound. Additionally, the Children's Hospital Research Institute of Manitoba provides core facilities and grant opportunities for relevant research.
The college admits 140 students annually into its Doctor of Medicine program. For the Class of 2028, the applicant pool included 1,173 eligible candidates, with 485 from Manitoba, 632 from out-of-province, and 56 identifying as Canadian Indigenous. The median adjusted grade point average (AGPA) for Manitoba applicants invited to interview was 4.22, while for out-of-province applicants, it was 4.50. The median Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) scores were 511 for Manitoba applicants and 522 for out-of-province applicants.

Although we could tier rank, over the past 25 years we've found no compelling benefit for ranking schools. Students are most successful when they prioritize personal and academic fit over school rank.
