The Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine (TCOM), established in 1970, is the oldest osteopathic medical school in Texas. It is part of the University of North Texas Health Science Center (UNTHSC) in Fort Worth. TCOM has been recognized for its excellence in primary care education, ranking as the top osteopathic medical school in the nation and 11th among all medical schools for primary care by U.S. News & World Report in 2023.
TCOM's curriculum is designed to prepare students for diverse medical careers, with a strong emphasis on primary care and preventive medicine. The program includes innovative courses in Health Systems Sciences, Patient Safety, and Whole Health. Students receive intensive patient safety training and are required to complete a patient safety course before graduation. Additionally, TCOM offers dual degree programs such as D.O./Ph.D., D.O./M.P.H., and D.O./M.S., allowing students to tailor their education to specific interests.
The college provides state-of-the-art facilities to enhance medical education. Students train in the Simulation Center and the Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment Lab, which offer realistic clinical scenarios and hands-on practice. These resources are integral to developing the skills necessary for effective patient care.
TCOM is committed to addressing the physician shortage in Texas, particularly in rural areas. The Rural Osteopathic Medical Education (ROME) program prepares students for practice in underserved settings, with over 70% of its graduates working in primary care. In the Class of 2022, 55% of students matched into primary care residencies, reflecting the college's dedication to producing primary care physicians.

Although we could tier rank, over the past 25 years we've found no compelling benefit for ranking schools. Students are most successful when they prioritize personal and academic fit over school rank.
