About the School

The University of Texas at Tyler School of Medicine, established in 2022, is the first medical school in East Texas and the seventh within the University of Texas System. It aims to enhance healthcare access in the region by training physicians committed to serving rural and underserved communities. The inaugural class of 40 students commenced their studies on July 1, 2023.

Curriculum

The Doctor of Medicine program at UT Tyler is a four-year curriculum emphasizing primary care and preventive health. The initial three semesters focus on comprehensive understanding of human body systems, wellness, and disease, alongside foundational patient care practices. Subsequent years involve clinical rotations across various specialties, preparing graduates for residency with a strong foundation in biomedical sciences and compassionate, culturally competent patient care.

Facilities

The Medical Education Building, a five-story, nearly 248,000-square-foot facility, is under construction in Tyler's medical district. Scheduled for completion in March 2025, it will support interdisciplinary education for medical students, resident training, and nursing programs. The building will feature classrooms, simulation labs, clinical and operating room training spaces, and multipurpose event and lecture areas.
