About the School

The Woody L. Hunt School of Dental Medicine (WLHSDM) at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso is the first dental school to open in Texas in over 50 years and the only one located on the U.S.-Mexico border. Established to address the oral health needs of the region, the school welcomed its inaugural class of 40 students in July 2021. The WLHSDM offers a Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) degree and is accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA).

Curriculum

The WLHSDM's curriculum is designed to integrate evidence-based learning, clinical experience, and interprofessional teamwork. A distinctive feature is the inclusion of clinical Spanish courses, preparing students to effectively communicate with diverse patient populations. Students begin interacting with patients within their first semester, emphasizing early clinical exposure. Facilities

The WLHSDM is housed in the Medical Sciences Building II, which was officially opened on September 8, 2021. This state-of-the-art facility more than doubles the university's research capacity and includes the Texas Tech Dental Oral Health Clinic. The clinic serves as the clinical arm of the dental school, providing students with hands-on experience under the supervision of licensed faculty dentists. The facility is equipped with cutting-edge dental technologies, including high-tech simulation and an advanced fabrication laboratory, ensuring students are trained with the latest advancements in dental care.
