"Morning report was interesting, and it was made clear that CHLA sees some very complicated kids. The residents seemed pretty happy and very close. "

"Residents seem like a cohesive group and feel they are getting a good education; affordable resident apartments right next to hospital; hospital facilities are a little older but decent"

"Very smart residents, strong morning report, variety of pathology seen at hospital, you come out having seen a lot of stuff and learn by doing"

"Building new hospital (2010) for earthquake regulations. Should be quite nice, and is adjacent to current facility. Located in interesting neighborhood with lots of diversity and close to Hollywood. Stand-alone Children's hospital, but surrounded by Kaiser and other hospitals.
Residents seemed quite happy, but hardworking. Morning report was VERY well attended by both house staff and faculty, and the discussion was lively and as fun as it could be. Program directors were exceedingly attentive to resident requests and seem to have a consistent pattern of making positive changes (improving call schedule, deleting poorly liked rotations, giving non-educational cases to ancillary staff, etc.). "New hospital pretty much ready, but are short funds to furnish and move in to it."

"resident apartments definitely had a dorm feel- not great for families/couples; heavy emphasis on tertiary/quaternary care rather than bread and butter peds; don't really like LA that much and especially not the area the hospital is in; residents acknowledged that they are worked very hard"

"Little community pediatrics exposure, residents work very hard (got the impression they violated work hours fairly regularly), 2/3+ of residents live in Rodney which is the hospital owned apartment across the street (felt very dormy and college-like), lots and lots of drinking at pre-interview gathering (residents had 5 rounds of shots over an hour and a half), residents seemed to belittle the importance of bread-and-butter peds and reading about patients saying that they learn by doing and volume instead, tough call schedule"

"Old facility not that nice. Cost of living is high, although hospital-subsidized apartment exists (cheap but not the nicest). Close to Hollywood, but not in Hollywood (a homeless individual took my chips as I was walking around). "

"You will hear over and over again from residents, faculty, etc. here that this is a program where "you learn by doing," which is code for "you will work your a** off here and not have time to read." I think this program would be a good fit for someone who is 1.) single; 2.) certain they want to sub-specialize; and 3.) doesn't mind/wants to work really, really hard during their residency because they believe that is the only way they will learn."

"morning report, PD overview (very long), tour, lunch with residents, interview, meet with dept. chair, tour of Rodney (thought it was a little odd they included this--underlined how much of residents social life revolved around this building)"

"Decent length, very laid back interview. Met residents at social event the night before and there were a good number of them there. Fun place."
