School Info

The College of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery at Des Moines University was the first school of podiatric medicine to be affiliated with an academic health science center. The uniqueness of this alliance provides many educational and resource advantages, not to mention the opportunity for developing inter-professional relationships with other future health care providers.

Curriculum

Students are trained as physicians first and specialists second. They take the first-year basic science curriculum with DMU’s osteopathic medical students.
• Hands-on opportunities are available on campus in the Des Moines University Foot and Ankle Clinic, the largest group of podiatric physicians in Iowa.
• In addition to lectures, DMU students use online applications, computer animation, motion analysis and lifelike models in state-of-the-art facilities.
• The curriculum ensures students are specialists in the lower extremities but also knowledgeable in a variety of specialties – vascular, surgical, therapeutic, dermatological and more.
• Students complete 40 weeks of clinical training in Des Moines and the surrounding area in the third year, and 11 months of clinical training at sites available nationwide in the fourth year.

Facilities

Technology is incorporated throughout the D.P.M. program. The University uses wireless technology for access to the network and the Internet. All incoming students receive laptops. The gross anatomy lab at DMU is state-of-the-art. It includes flat-screen monitors at each dissection station. Students have learning opportunities at the Des Moines University Foot & Ankle Clinic Institute the largest team of podiatric physicians in Iowa. Students complete a comprehensive course in physical diagnosis using DMU's nationally recognized Standardized Performance Assessment Lab. Students gain real-life experience working with the Human Performance Lab simulation teaching tools and Iowa Simulation Center.
