School Info

The University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine was founded more than 30 years ago as an innovative six-year medical program. From its combined baccalaureate/doctor of medicine curriculum to a docent system that emphasizes small group learning, the UMKC School of Medicine has remained a trendsetter in medical education.

Curriculum

M.D. students enter the medical program and enroll in the Human Structure Function series in January and remain in the program for 48 consecutive months. Three distinct curriculum plans have been devised, which allow M.D. students to proceed through the curriculum along one of three possible tracks. Two tracks provide the M.D. students with five months of time during which they do not formally enroll. The first track allows M.D. students to elect the five-month leave of absence immediately following completion of USMLE Step 1, and the second track provides for a five-month leave of absence midway through the clinical clerkship sequence. The third track allows M.D. students to complete their 48 months of continuous enrollment in December, and does not provide any break during the program other than one month of vacation time per year of enrollment.

Facilities

As part of a community-based institution, our students receive early and continuous clinical education at our hospital partners Truman Medical Centers, Saint Luke`s Hospital, Children`s Mercy Hospital, and Western Missouri Mental Health Center. Through the strengths of these partner institutions, our school continues to develop new research opportunities to further the Life Science Initiative in the Kansas City metropolitan area.

What do you like least?

"I could go on and on - administration is EXTREMELY insensitive and frustrating, nobody is rooting for you to succeed, lots of arbitrary rules, excessive requirements, and duty hour violations. It's overpriced and so many things are designed to scam you out of money continuously (they will fine you if your permit isn't displayed exactly correctly in the garage, after you already spent $300 on it; they will force you to buy a stethoscope for a marked up price from the UMKC bookstore; they will penalize you for not buying certain resources needed to succeed but will not provide any assistance despite tuition cost rising annually). There's no support whatsoever for students - mental health here is a JOKE. At least 75% of every graduating class is on at least one SSRI, the school actively penalizes you for days off and can deny them at their discretion. They expect you to request a single day off two months in advance, but your own schedule will not come out until a week before for multiple clerkships. Save your time and your money - go ANYWHERE else, do anything else, do NOT come here. There's a reason 10+% of people extend or leave annually. They're not stupid, they're just tired of being abused by a system set up for them to fail. Get out while you still can." | Report Response

About the LizzyM Score

LizzyM, SDN Moderator and medical school admissions committee member, is the inventor of the LizzyM Score. The score allows you to see if you are a competitive applicant at a given school. If your LizzyM Score is far below or above the average, you may not be a good fit. If your score is far below, your application may be screened out due to numerical cutoffs. If it is far above, the school may assume they are your “safety” school and that you won’t attend if they offer an acceptance. This score should be used only as a guide to help you select schools and is not a guarantee of acceptance at any school. If you use this as your sole criteria to select medical schools to apply to, you don’t deserve to get in anyway.
