Hi everyone! I know its pretty late in the cycle, but does anybody know if admissions might still send out some interview invites? has this school sent out invites in may/june in the past?

No. I'm sure they have stopped sending out interview invites at the end of Feb.

If you are able to rotate outside of Kansas City 3rd and 4th year, I would highly suggest it. KCU does not have their own affiliated hospital, so they rely on relationships with local docs, typically KCU grads. This inevitably means that there are not enough specialists for each student. I was lucky enough (sarcasm) to have 3 family medicine rotations as a 3rd year because there are not enough OBGYN and IM preceptors, which completely cheated me out of the opportunity to learn about these specialties. My average drive was also over an hour one way for my rotations. The "Kansas City area" does not mean in Kansas City. I recently finished a rotation that was an hour 45 from my house. KCU will not accomodate for where you live. If you live in North KC, they'll give you rotations in Olathe. If you want a well rounded rotation experience, and you don't want to spend hours commuting every day, stay far away from Kansas City if you choose to attend KCU. Good luck everyone.
As a 2nd year who is rotating in "KC region" and just got my schedule with multiple rotation sites over an hour away from where I live, can confirm. I would highly recommend choosing a site with a dedicated hospital so you won't need to travel around. Driving that far for a rotation is ridiculous. Thanks KCU!

Hello KCU,

Guess what? In a few days I will finally be outa here! Just a few honest and down to earth messages to you guys before I move on..

COMET has been the most corrupt, self involved group of delinquents this school had to offer. They've got no soul and they've made heck on earth for all of us during the first 2 years. I was a minute late to one of my OMM labs and they wouldn't let me in? Sorry that I had to be stuck in traffic while we had a tornado warning.

The next 2 years wasn't as great either.. finding my own rotations and having my clinical coordinator yell at me for not sending in a simple doc? All the while I had 2 board exams to study for with a shameless surg rotation (who has been removed by his surgery group btw, so nice job having us rotate with him!) :) so thank you for that.

Oh mandatory volunteering 2 days before my exams? Thank you!

I can't go to my friends wedding because I used up my "sick days" during my grandma's funeral? Thanks!

Forcing me to drop a whole rotation just because your stupid contract wouldn't go through.. on your side! How professional!

Huge amount of staff turnover to other schools? How loyal!

However with all that being said, I am glad to finally become a physician. Outa this place and onto residency in a few months. Thank you KCU, sincerely. Many downs, but I always kept my head up.

Thank you for sharing your experience. What residency are you going into, if you don't mind me asking? Also, as someone that is currently WL, do you think I should pursue KCU if taken off? Sounds like your experience hasn't been great :(

Hey! Going into IM. Keep in mind KCU is better than no med school. Send a DM.

Not everybody will be happy with their choices. I personally have had a GREAT time at KCU. Keep in mind, there are over 400 students in each KCU class and very few people that feel they should crap all over their institution to prospective students. Some of the aforementioned complaints are valid, others are not applicable to everyone. Every institution has its problems and there's no way to know based on personal experience if any school is better than another, it is very subjective. That being said, if you don't see the value of the school you're applying to you should probably give your wait list spot to someone who does.

Thanks for your response! You're right, I think every complaint is valid since its one's own experience, but they should be taken with a grain of salt. I'd still be thrilled to be accepted to KCU, but thank you for the valid reminder!

I am going to put my empathy pants on real quick. It has been a while since I was a premed, so please bear with me. First off, congrats to everyone who was accepted to a medical school. It is a great and honorable achievement. Please take the next few months to relax and spend time with friends and family.

I want to express that most of us med students do not go back on SDN/ Reddit to express our views to the public. When I was a premed however (different account) I was ecstatic about each and every med school I was accepted to and was logged on 24/7. But please, pay attention to your own confirmation bias. There is nothing wrong with feeling great about the school you want to attend but pay attention to those who have experiences from both the good and not so good sides.

There’s definitely more than a “few students” who think this way about KCU, so thank you friend for assuming otherwise. There have been several internal problems here which have been stacking up to the point every consecutive year has to suffer. I have no reason to embellish it. Sure we can talk about how every med school “has its ups and down” and all that glittery hodgepodge, but we feel premeds and med students deserve real insight. Critiquing an institution is not equivalent to talking crap. It's just as fair as talking about it's upsides.

One more thing- Regardless of whatever medical school you decide to attend, keep your head up, advocate for yourself and your peers, and make your needs known. It is a long and very rewarding journey, and I sincerely wish each and every one of you the very best.

I don't think that people sharing criticisms are necessarily trying to dissuade anyone from going to KCU. When you're applying and interviewing, every school tries to make itself out to be amazing, and a lot of times you're not getting unfiltered info because even the med student panels are students that specifically volunteered to do it and are probably less likely to hold negative opinions about the school, and certainly less likely to share negative opinions in a way that is not anonymous.

Needing to set up your own rotations in 4th year is objectively bad. Needing to drive a far distance for a rotation is objectively bad. Good professors leaving KCU to teach elsewhere is objectively bad. Sure, everyone is also gonna have their own subjective opinions but they're worth listening to if multiple people are expressing similar criticisms.

At the end of the day, KCU is a solid option and there aren't many DO schools that I would choose to attend over it. Prospective students should not feel bad about going here. We have P/F, optional attendance, less OMM, and it's not in the middle of nowhere like a lot of DO schools are. People cite the match list, which is usually very good, but 100% of the credit should go to the individual students and not the school.

So if we rotate in the Kansas City region, do we just have one assigned preceptor for each rotation or multiple? Do we also have to go to multiple different locations during a single rotation or do we stay at the same site for the whole rotation?
For the most part, you will go to a different location for every rotation, although there could be a chance you could do your IM and surgery rotation at the same hospital, for example. I have been at Olathe, Harrisonville, Clinton, Lexington, Liberty, basically all over.

hmm just checked my workday and i guess there was a waitlist survey I was supposed to do by May 10th? lol

"Please respond to this survey by the deadline provided below. If we do not receive a response from you by the following deadlines we'll take that as indication you are no longer interested in KCU and will remove you from our waitlist:

Clinical Psychology - May 1st

Dental Medicine - May 1st

Osteopathic Medicine Waitlist - May 10th"

Very cool KCU considering I haven't received a single email since my waitlist back in October :)

I emailed them about it and they said the date is incorrect. It was just posted recently so no need to worry and just fill it out as soon as you can!

I got the email yesterday about staying on the WL, and I saw it said to respond by May 10th? I'll probably email them and let them know I didn't receive the email until yesterday.

Withdrew myself from the WL as I got into my state DO program, I hope this increases the chances of one of y'all getting in! Good luck future physician colleagues!

So then how do you go about scheduling rotations 3rd and 4th year? Do you just email physicians in the area or wherever you're wanting to end up and ask them if you can rotate with them? Does KCU have a list of people to reach out to? It seems so daunting.
