Application Tips with Apply Point: What Medical School Interviewers are Looking for

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Most medical school interviewers are looking to assess your interpersonal traits, commitment to and aptitude for medicine, potential contributions to the school/community, and to discuss and resolve any red flags in your academic and/or professional record.

Our last post covered the interpersonal traits that interviewers are looking for. Here, we'll cover the remaining categories.

Commitment & Aptitude for Medicine
  • Demonstrated ability to overcome adversity
  • Clear understanding of what a career in medicine entails (the good and the bad!)
  • Demonstrated commitment to the profession
  • Fortitude necessary to make it through medical school, residency training, and a future career
Community
  • Willingness/ability to contribute to the medical school community
  • Fit with student body, faculty, and staff
  • Unique or diverse elements that you will add or contribute to the student body
Overall
  • Consistency between application and interview
  • Responses to any red flags that have arisen during the admissions process; you should cover these points with explanations, not excuses
