Jobs for the Medical School Graduate?

Well, I don't know what the original poster's motivations are, but sometimes things happen during medical school that make us change our mind. In my case, I have two kids with chronic medical conditions and recently lost my MIL, whom we had counted on to help with childcare. Due to their issues...

Jobs for the Medical School Graduate?

Don't forget teaching and research. Community colleges, in particular, often need people to teach anatomy and physiology to health professions students, as well as General Biology. Some universities may hire as an adjunct faculty or at least lab instructor. As for research, you can always get a...

James H Quillen Coll. of Med. Class of 2009

Agree with Deb- 2nd year is better than 1st...Earl the Pearl is da man! And the good news is, it gets even better! 4th year is da bomb!! Once you get over the humongous hurdle of 3rd year, it's smooth sailing (well, at least until intern year, anyway) I must confess- I absolutely hated anatomy...

how are the fellow horsemen(women) doing?

I matched in IM myself- only ranked 2 programs, but really hoping for #1, since it's in my hometown. We have 2 young 'uns now, so really need to be close to family during residency! I'll be graduating a couple of weeks late pending stupid frigging Step 2 CS, which is now required for graduation...

how are the fellow horsemen(women) doing?

Since it's match week, just thought I'd check and see if any of you guys were still out there...

What if you don't honor anything!

So I don't get why residents get so much input into our evals, anyway. Yes, I understand we spend lots more time working with them than with attendings. But these people are busy, overworked people who have ZERO training in teaching. On my OB rotation, I got a grand total of ONE attending...

Platinum Vignettes is the best I found for Peds.

    Bummed out

Very well put. I couldn't agree more. I got screwed on my OB grade because I apparently pissed off ONE resident- who promptly told all the other residents how awful I was. All I did was ask a question about a procedure in front of a patient- ok, so I shouldn't have asked in front of the patient...

    Clinical Skills Exam

Another Class of 2005'er here, equally pissed. Especially because I had to reapply after not getting in to the Class of 2004!

How much do or will you owe after four years of Medical school?

The sad thing is that I AM at a state school! But tuition here has gone up 15% or so each year, so that now it's over $20,000 per year. There is very little financial aid here other than loans, so that's how I'm ending up with close to $150K debt regardless.

    my step 1 experience...

Here's my update: I ended up doing fairly well, though didn't quite get the 245 I was hoping before I took the test. Got a 238/96, which is way better than I thought when I walked out of the test. My suggestion: do as many practice ???s as possible. QBank is easier than the real thing, but...

When do you find time to study during surgery rotation?

I'm having the same problem on OB/GYN. These 80+ hour weeks are killing me and this is just so different from the way I'm used to studying. During preclinical years, I skipped class and mostly studied at home all the time. Now we have mandatory attendance at lectures, even when we're post call...

    Older Medical Students

I think you'll be pleasantly surprised to find that you're far from the oldest person in your class. I was 30 when I started and in my class of 60, there were at least 10 others in their 30's, one person in her 40's and one woman who had just turned 50. A few other students have kids and we all...

    my step 1 experience...

Just took my Step 1 today and have to agree with Smurfette- mine was FULL of those horrible physiology questions with 10 different options for levels of hormones increased, decreased, stays the same, blah blah. I must have had at least 10 questions of that variety and I suspect I missed all of...

Do I need to review anatomy and/or embryo?

I'm doing the Qbank questions and am scoring in the 60's in every field except anatomy and embryology- a measly 47% and 52% respectively. Is there enough anatomy and embryo on Step 1 to make it worth my while to study these more? Or am I better off focusing more on path, pharm, and phys?
