About the School
Located in the Back Bay area of Boston, the New England College of Optometry is a professional graduate institution educating students in the discipline of optometry. NECO provides a four-year post-baccalaureate professional curriculum taught by more than 40 full-time and 100 part-time and adjunct faculty. The College aims to give its students a broad and sound training in the science of optometry, a thorough training in the practice of optometry, to uplift the science of optometry to the highest standard, and to make useful, practical and successful optometrists.
Curriculum
The new curriculum has increased student clinical experiences and implemented screenings into the first semester. At the very beginning of your first semester, you will assist upperclassmen in vision screenings at Head Start programs and elementary schools. After passing the first credentialing exam of the fall semester, you will begin conducting these screenings more independently. This is a wonderful opportunity to practice the entrance tests you've learned and start establishing yourself as a clinician. The number of assigned screenings increases in your second semester. Clerkship assignments begin the fall of your second year; at this point you will work directly with optometrists in a variety of settings (neighborhood clinics, medical centers, private practices, hospitals). Clinic assignments start the summer following your second year and continue throughout the remainder of the 4 year program.
Facilities
Located in the historic Back Bay section of Boston, Massachusetts, The New England College of Optometry resides in a restored, Italian Renaissance styled residence built in 1894. The College has serene views of the Charles River and is only a few blocks from the shopping and culturally influenced Newbury Street and historic Fenway Park. This historic mansion includes 3 contemporary lecture halls, a pre-clinic with cutting edge equipment and a library which houses several special collections. The library is also home to the Marco Center for Instructional Technology, a state of the art instructional facility and is wired for laptop and Internet use.\n
