About the School
The primary mission of NSUCO is the education of doctors of optometry who provide quality clinical care and who emphasize a caring and ethical commitment to the welfare of their patients. Students in the optometry program are engendered with the desire and ability to pursue the scientific knowledge, clinical competence, and professional standards necessary to practice optometry to the fullest scope. As part of a state-supported, regional university, the College of Optometry limits admission to residents of nine states: Oklahoma, Arkansas, Colorado, Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri, Nebraska, New Mexico, and Texas.

The College of Optometry is housed in the former W. W. Hastings Indian Health Service Hospital Complex. The University acquired the complex in 1988 from the Department of Labor and, following extensive renovation, the College of Optometry moved from Wyly Hall into the main building of the complex in 1992. The building is now officially named the Optometry Building. One other large building in the complex houses the University's Literacy Center. At the beginning of the fall semester of 1996, the College also acquired use of one of the two smaller buildings in the complex, which formerly housed the Bi-lingual Education Program. This building is located next to the Optometry Building and houses the Continuing Optometric Education program, billing department, and office of the director of the Rural Eye Program. One of the newest additions to campus is the expansion to the academic wing of the Optometry Building, which provides students and faculty with two classrooms and a Conference Center which seats 125. This building addition is a work of modern architecture featuring state-of-the-art classrooms and labs that provide access to local and global network resources.
