About the School

The Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine, established in 2015, is Washington State University's community-based medical school located in Spokane, Washington. Named after WSU's late president, Dr. Elson S. Floyd, the college aims to expand medical education and healthcare access across the state. It offers nine academic degree programs, including Medicine, Nutrition and Exercise Physiology, Speech and Hearing Sciences, Health Administration and Leadership, and Medical Ethics, as well as Graduate Medical Education programs. The college received full accreditation from the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) in June 2021.

Curriculum

The college employs a community-based medical education model, training students in existing community clinics and hospitals near WSU's four regional campus locations: Everett, Spokane, Tri-Cities, and Vancouver. This distributive model allows students to gain exposure to a variety of clinical settings from their first year, working in teams of experienced healthcare professionals. The curriculum emphasizes interprofessional education, leadership training, and innovative patient-care delivery systems, preparing students to address healthcare challenges in rural and underserved areas of Washington.

Facilities

In August 2023, the Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine dedicated its new Medicine Building on the WSU Spokane campus. This $17 million project, funded primarily by the Washington legislature and private donations, provides modern learning and collaboration spaces, a campus testing center, and faculty offices. The new facility consolidates the college's operations, which were previously spread across multiple buildings, enhancing the educational environment for students and faculty.
