Out of curiosity, has anyone had any luck contacting the Eastern Virginia program? The contact email on ERAS is an address for a faculty member who is not mentioned in the Pain faculty list but is in the PM&R department. Then when you send an email, a strange "mail delivery subsystem" response always comes back. The phone number listed for the coordinator and basically everyone on the site seems like it's out of order. Just wondering, thanks.

I've tried with no luck

Any word from Hopkins?

Word through the grapevine is that Hopkins should be sending out invites in the next week or so. Not sure of the accuracy, but this came from one of the attendings here (I'm a resident at Hopkins).

Based on the email I got, there "are no opportunities available at this time to interview". Could be that they just haven't sent them yet but have a list.

Can anyone rank Manhattan programs (NYU, Columbia, Sinai West)?

Can anyone rank second tier Manhattan programs (NYU, Columbia, Sinai West)?
I think I would never call Sinai West second tier. I matched at a different program last year, but I know Sinai West well from colleagues and also the interview day.
Sinai West is a program which probably has the most procedural volume out of any NYC program. The fellows were doing stim IMPLANTS from week 1, and overall they did a lot more neuromodulation than Cornell or Sinai. The fellows were also extremely happy.

The only issue with Sinai in general (whether Sinai East or West) is that outside the NYC area, no one knows who or what a “Mount Sinai“ even is. The residents at Sinai East in particular don’t seem to realize this (their heads are too far up their own asses to see this reality). But otherwise I’d say if you want a VERY strong procedural fellowship, Sinai West is the best fit for you.

Anyone from Chicago that can give their review or opinion of some of the Chicago programs a bit more? UChicago, UIC, northwestern?

Is there a second application cycle? Heard there might be a July application cycle. I'm new to Pain Management, so I'm not sure.

Do we really have to pay for a new token just to enter NRMP? Sounds ridiculous

What is everyone's impression of virtual interviews so far? Which programs stand out to you?

started off awkward but as time has gone on I’ve come to be okay with it. Definitely still miss being able to check out the hospital/city in person and getting a feel for the vibe there - but overall I'm not super upset about that.

the programs that stick out the most to me are the ones that have their sh** together (Zoom invites sent well in advance, responsive coordinators, program overview presentation actually done, etc)

Anyone from Chicago that can give their review or opinion of some of the Chicago programs a bit more? UChicago, UIC, northwestern?

UChicago - solid small program with high number of stims (on par with Rush, if not more - if you want to do implants, this was recommended to me as #1 in the city). Super inbred - taken only their own grads for years and years. Expanded to 3 slots from 2 last year, immediately filled with... another UC grad. Heavier workload. Nice campus. Highly regarded, but even if you get through the impossible barrier you're likely to be a black sheep.

Rush - workhorse program, the surgical residency of chronic pain in Chicago. Excellent numbers, lots of procedures, a ton of stims/fellow, and good faculty with great post-fellowship job prospects, but teach by virtue of volume/suffering.

Northwestern - mid-tier. Their strength is the name and the peds pain experience, the education you get is good, but overall it's not regarded super highly. Much like 3.6 Roentgen, not great, not terrible. It's a nice name to add to your resume, and not one that anybody will hold against you. Beautiful facilities.

Loyola - word on the street was that Loyola had a lot of issues with leadership turnover and program instability, both in Pain and other departments. My PD was candid in telling me that I should not rank them highly for that reason during my application cycle. Worth looking into since I heard they've made some good changes in the last little while, but not one of the top names by any means.

UIC - Good, laid-back program. Don't know too much about their numbers, but good lifestyle with nice people. Solid faculty. You won't be unhappy here.

Cook - Good bread and butter, lower end of middle of the road for procedures, too much clinic, and very low number of stims, no pumps/kyphos (because County). Very nice faculty and most cush lifestyle out of all programs in the city. Great option if you just want to chill for a year, get boarded, and do bread and butter pain.

A program in my top tier offered a spot out of the match. Any downsides to taking this offer? Should I stay within the match?

You've got to ask yourself why they're offering you something outside the match and understands the details of it. If it's an ACGME fellowship, you'll still be protected by the GME fellow limits generally, but it's a little weird.

- Is it a 2 year contract?
-- If so, is it worth it to you to have that extended opportunity cost?
- What happens if you don't match?
- Why can't they just rank you to match?
- Is there a major change coming or news that'll make this program unrankable?

I hate to be a negative nelly, but there are some "brand name" programs that are on devilishly thin ice.

Can anyone give a review of the SUNY Buffalo program?

I am curious, for programs who provide 2 yr track (clinical + research training), do they fill this 2 yr track out of formal match?

Welp. Dunno about anyone else, but my interview season has now likely concluded. Anyone else find it a little odd that you submitted your application 5-6 months ago, interviewed for a couple months, and now wait 4 months for match day? Quite the timeline.

Pretty crazy we haven't heard a peep out of Cornell...maybe they're taking a year off from training fellows?

Yep, it’s pretty ridiculous. However, I’ve essentially become the in-house consultant for almost every residency program on how they should conduct virtual interviews. Nearly our whole GME may be interviewing remotely this next year.

Our entire GME has committed to virtual interviews as well. Have definitely seen programs that are bad at it and some who seem to have it figured out.

The part that feels odd to me is the doom and gloom many of us felt a few months ago with everyone saying the cycle would be delayed and now, with The exception of a couple programs, I’m essentially done with interviews. Seems like COVID hasn’t done much with respect to timelines except that maybe invites went out a few weeks later than would have been expected.

wonder if the ones we haven't heard from are filling in house, like several programs

Hello, has anyone received an interview at Cornell?

Hi everyone. I was once a studentdoctor.net poster, dating back to 2000, nice to see this still going!

Please excuse Cornell, we are finalizing the lists this week and you should start to hear things next week. You can understand things have been highly disrupted here in NYC.

I also want to promote the upcoming Eastern Pain Association webinar series with fellowship program directors where you will be able to engage with and ask questions of them. First one is June 29th at 6pm

Thank you so much, DR. Mehta. Understanding situation at NYC. Best luck and keep healthy and safe.
Thank you silentscope, best wishes to you as well.

i am happy to answer any other questions about cornell, but also want to respect the free conversation here and not make anyone feel uncomfortable in posting. perhaps send me a private message, and hope to see many of you on the webinar.

wonder what the "magic number" is going to be this year to match. I think last year it was 8-9 interviews

I'm not sure if anybody else has some thoughts but my sense is that more interviews are being sent out than last year, and they possibly could be more applicants this year(hearsay from talking to other applicants...who knows?). In the few interviews (3) were program directors flat out mention how many people they are interviewing it was more than the Data that is listed on FRIEDA, so I would think the previous "magic number," to match would be hard to correlate to our atypical application cycle.
