2023-2024 Orlando College of Osteopathic Medicine

One concern is this school intends to do Self Directed Learning. As per the OCOM site,

Like many modern medical school curricula, OCOM will not have mandatory in-person lectures. Watching a lecture is a form of passive learning. Evidence exists which tells us that virtual attendance at these types of sessions (content delivery sessions) actually portends better learning outcomes than in-person attendance since the student can control the speed of the lecture, go back to review something that was missed or challenging, etc. Therefore, OCOM’s curriculum will consist of self-directed learning sessions which are pre-recorded “lecture-like” sessions assigned to watch as part of the self-directed learning experience. Students will be able to watch these on their own time. Then, while in on campus sessions, students will be challenged by faculty to apply what they have learned on their own.

Are students paying upwards of 60K + to self learn? I feel this is a Medical school, not some Arts or History school. Not sure how students will learn Anatomy. Maybe I am mistaken.

Recently did a call with them and that was something that was mentioned I was about to post. Private loan interest rates are sky high. When asked about the stats from the admissions person I am currently asked they said that the MCAT was a hard 500. There is no wiggle. Also, they basically have "lectureless" learning so make sure your are someone who can stay on task and manage a course load with basically self teaching.
self teaching Anatomy?

KansasCOM tried this and it didn’t work. OCOM is not going to have a good time and I bet those first year students are going to hate their lives.

Hello. If you had any questions about the area happy to answer.

I've watched the school go from dirt to finished product and it is pretty remarkable. The facility and building is stunning and the general area is one of the best in Florida and fastest growing areas nationwide. Very safe and affluent and lots to do. Downtown winter garden is really nice. About 1 hour from beaches (daytona, new smyrna), 1-2 hours from tampa depending on traffic, 3.5 hr to miami. New brightline train to/from south florida is pretty sweet. It is also a few minutes from disney but not on the touristy side. It is located in the center of horizon west in the hamlin town center. Close to highways, shops, food, breweries. You can see disney fireworks every single night from the school and most places in horizon west at 845-9pm .

was wondering how interview was/ how yall prepped!!
everyone was super friendly! you speak to a faculty member and a member of the admissions team and they ask you why DO, why OCOM, and other typical interview questions. i would prep those answers and also look over the OCOM website to learn more about the school. good luck!

Agree 100%, it will not work. OCOM seems to cut corners here, cheaper to just provide some content delivery app rather than hire faculty to deliver in person lectures.

Is the inaugural class Full?
I don't think so. I just got pulled from the WL and given an A last weekend, I will be turning it down. But yeah, it does not seem they have filled their inaugural class yet.

Just got pulled from the WL this morning. Will be declining. GL to those who are waiting or are matriculating. The school is probably better than the Caribbean, but no federal loans and high COL is kinda rough.

Have they offered scholarships to any incoming students?

No scholarship and No Federal loans too for the next 4 years. Plus no lectures, trying to cut corners already

Are students paying upwards of 60K tuition + another 30-40 K to self learn? This is a Medical school, Faculty needs to teach, in particular Anatomy. Not sure from where or how did they reach a conclusion that "Evidence exists which tells us that virtual attendance at these types of sessions (content delivery sessions) actually portends better learning outcomes than in-person attendance"??

Withdrew my A on Friday - hope it goes to one of y'all patiently waiting. Def stings a little as I honestly loved the school. I'm excited to see how it establishes itself into the med school landscape over the next few years. It will be a fantastic program

The school is probably better than the Caribbean<== well, apart from being physically located in USA, there is not much going and OCOM need to prove first which would take a while. Caribbean schools have been established for a long time and students attending Caribbean schools do get residency in USA. Self learning and Virtual Anatomy and 110K COA are not good signs though.

Hi, this is one of the questions on the AACOMAS page for OCOM.

Have you ever participated in a U.S. or international relief trip or community healthcare service event?

Could someone explain what a community healthcare service event is? Is that like general volunteering or something?

Is anyone on the boards committed to going here?

I haven’t applied but was just curious. Location is great but the private loans and lack of real instruction is pretty concerning. Policy about withdrawing acceptance is odd as well. Would provide opportunity to match in Florida/the southeast which is desireable though

Hardly seen anyone on this Board with an "A" to OCOM and planning to attend. There were some 'A's earlier, but those folks have rescinded their A and chose some other school.

If you look at their website, the school itself is is saying

"OCOM will not have mandatory in-person lectures. Watching a lecture is a form of passive learning. The above statement by the school is a bit concerning honestly. Paying 110K as COA and taking private loan and doing self learning + Virtual Anatomy are signs that should not be ignored. Match comes later.

Furthermore, to piggyback what was said here, with its requirement of a 500 MCAT and a 3.2 sGPA/cGPA, most applicants can get into (and are better off at) a much more established program, with a better curriculum and access to federal loans with those stats. With stats that solid, it makes it hard to rationalize attending OCOM over any other A.

So you guys think they are going to really struggle to fill a class?
Honestly, considering they had to extend their primary application deadline for the ''23-'24 cycle, I would say they are having difficulty filling up seats for their inaugural class of 97 (?) students.

and the application deadline was extended from March 1 to April 12th, 2024. Folks would have already applied by March 1, 2024.
