housing in DC (GW)

i am going crazy trying to find reasonable housing in DC. any one from the area? anyone going to gw in the same situation?

What do you consider "reasonable"? Being from Arlington myself, "reasonable" can mean something far different from what you might consider reasonable.

Oh, and if you don't mind finding a random roommate (that's what I did for school), then go to Washingtonpost.com. They have a link there for finding roommates. If you would like something nice, go for something in Clarendon/Ballston. It's a pricey area (somewhat of an understatement), but it's very nice. Part of it's price is it's convenience and access to numerous things. Clarendon is actually considered a sort of mecca for singles (I read some article about it having one of the highest percentages of singles!). There are clubs, bars, restaurants, theaters, a mall (tiny, but at least you have one). It also has several metro stops from which GW is an easy ride to. The metro stop is literally right in front of GW and it's new hospital. But if you're worried about cost, then you're prolly gonna need to find a roommate to live in Clarendon

I'm not in favor of living in Northern VA (Ballston) - it's strip mall city, and the towns lack character. However it all depends on you and what you like. Washington D.C. is an excellent place to live - try the Dupont Circle area - GW is only a metro stop away, and the rents are reasonable ($700 for studio, $1000 for one bedroom) - of course realize I'm coming from New York City, so these rents look cheap. Foggy Bottom (Where GW is located) would be a fun place to live as well, although it might be harder to find housing there. If you find a roomate you can splint the rent on a two bedroom ($1300) - and then your rent is $650, not bad. When I was looking for apts. in D.C., the best thing to do was to just walk around the neighborhoods you want to move to and talk to people about availabilities. I found my last studio in Dupont because of a posting outside the door of the building, not a newspaper ad. There is one newspaper with good listings because they are free - the paper comes out on Wednesdays, however I can't remember the name. Just ask around, and someone can tell you what it's called.

I just found an apt. in foggy bottom through the GW website. It's a bit outdatd, but pretty helpful.

hehe -- yes, it totally depends on what you like. Personally, I like to live in the suburbs, but I guess I'm somewhat biased. I actually would not live in the Ballston area myself -- I think it's too pricey. But I suggested it b/c you're not from around here, and so metro rail is right there and very accessible. If you have a car, take your pick of places then!

I'm totally feeling you about the prices. Those prices are totally what I am used to. You shoulda seen how happy I was when looking for apts down in norfolk! I could get a 1 bedroom, alllll by my lonesome with no roomie for $400-500. I was totally feelin that!

my place went on the market a couple weeks ago and the basement apt also went on the market. you can't beat a rowhouse apt for $1150 with 2 BR/2 BA and including utilities. it is about a 15 min walk to the nearest metro. i was going to go to gw but got in to einstein so i am heading to nyc. you could easily ride your bike or take public transportation.

and live in dupont. it's the coolest neigborhood in dc and walking distance from gw.

expect to pay 700+ for a bedroom in a shared apt in a good neighborhood anywhere in dc.

what a great city. have so much fun living there you lucky dogs going to med school in dc!!

I lived in Foggy Bottom last year and loved being so close to school. My roommate and I (another med student) payed $1100 together, on a studio. This year I am living by myself, a 4min walk to school, in a studio for $850. 1 bedrooms in Foggy Bottom range around $1500-$1800. It's really expensive. But check the school's website www.gwired.com for the off campus housing. There are a lot of postings there.
