how do acceptance letters look like?

How do acceptance letters look like? Are they always come in a thick envelope or it could be in a thin one? Are there any signs on the envelopes that medical schools make them idfferent from the rejection ones?

They're usually a thick packet of papers. But apparently a few schools (can't remember which ones) send a thin regular business sized envelope. I'm sure these latter ones would not look any different from the outside from a rejection. But mostly, schools send a big, thick packet if you're in.
 
Harvard sends out thin small letters to everyone.

i think UChicago's letter was thin too, except they call you first...

waitlists are also thin, i think.

so basically, just open anything you get! :) 'cuz you never know what's inside.

UCONN's acceptance was a thin letter. I was sure it was a waitlist or rejection...
 
My school sends all acceptances certified mail, but it seems that's the exception- my other acceptances came regular U.S. mail. Still, if you get a certified mail notice, it's probably good news!

Maryland's was a regular business envelope, moderately thick, as was Alabama's. I can't speak for any other school.
 
None of mine were think.

One was hand-written address, so that was a give away. but the other two were just 2-4 sheets inside, so not any thicker than a rejection (which I have recieved enough of to know).
 
Harvard's acceptance letter is short but straight to the point. And they're thin.
Duke's rather thickish.
 
USC's was in a big envelope, but was thin (4 sheets of paper).
 
USA's was thin. The dean didn't even sign it...it was stamped. :( Oh well, I'm over it! :D
 
My Jefferson acceptance letter came in a thin envelope. I thought it was a rejection when I saw it.

Here are the five schools at which I was accepted:

Einstein- thin letter, one page, included envelope so you know the difference b/c you can feel the envelope
GW- 8x10 packet
MCP- 8x10 packet
NYMC- 8x10 packet
Temple- business size envelop, three pages
 
I just wanted to say again that it's so cool that Dr Kermit and I applied to almost all of the same schools----only difference is that she's in 5 and I'm in none...but at least I can always ask her what to expect! <img border="0" alt="[Laughy]" title="" src="graemlins/laughy.gif" /> <img border="0" alt="[Laughy]" title="" src="graemlins/laughy.gif" />
 
Mt Sinai's is small and thin. When I first saw it I thought for sure I was rejected/w-listed. Emory's is a big package and it says "ACCEPTANCE" on the front. They're funny people. UCSD's is small but pretty thick. Basically, as someone mentioned above, they all look different so open every piece of mail you get!! Don't throw anything away!
 
well i doubt anybody has ever thrown something away without opening it. i'm sure people would open it even if they'd gotten a call the day before saying that they wouldn't be accepted and a letter had been mailed. they would still check to make sure, or for closure.

bring on those thin envelopes babies (i call my schools my babies. i got 'em all lined up. come on baby, come to daddy...).
 
I agree caveman. But the admissions lady at one school told us a story of one applicant who was accepted. He was sent an acceptance letter in a thin envelope. The school never heard from the applicant and they finally called him and asked what happened, and found out that he had thrown away the letter becasue it was thin. What a lame-O, because it was Harvard.
 
I probably won't open my Emory or UF letters. I already know what's coming. I suppose I could open them so that I can curse the schools yet again while reading.
 
Don't forget to save rejection letters; you may need them for appeals! :p :p :p

Also if you plan to take the mcat a third time (or maybe it's fourth) you need proof of rejection.

I'm saving those babies till I'm in!

I find this thread funny. Will this info really ease those 2 seconds between seeing an envelope and opening it? It probably takes that much time to remember what the acceptance is supposed to look like. <img border="0" alt="[Laughy]" title="" src="graemlins/laughy.gif" />

p.s. I don't mean to be a hypocrite b/c the other day I got a package notification in my mailbox and worried about it, so I guess it makes sense to know whether the acceptance will be big or small. Maybe I'm just bitter.

And Foxy, don't worry, you and I are bound to get in somewhere. :) As soon as these people holding multiple acceptances start making room for those of us with none. :)

And of course let's not forget those schools who send you an email to check your status and then you have to check the web application page to see a rejection or acceptance.

I received thin ones. My letter from University of Kentucky didn't even sound like an acceptance. It said something to the effect of "the committee has recommended you for acceptance and the dean has concurred with this decision." I was like, wtf, what a weird way to put it. Anyway, I had received a phone call a week before saying I was accepted so I knew what to expect. They dont send thick packets out until its closer to school time. (I received 2 acceptances in October).
 
When I was interviewing at Georgetown we were told a story about how one year a student threw away his acceptance letter, and didn't realize it until Georgetown called him to ask why he hadn't responded. Apparently they only send out small, thin envelopes. So make sure you open everything you get, no matter how grim the envelope size may appear! :wink:

Well... all I can tell you is that Case sends acceptance in very thin, normal business letter envelopes and OSU sends a thin 8 1/2 X 11 tan oversized envelope. UChicago, UMich, and Vanderbilt... well I can only tell you that their waitlist letters come in thin business envelopes.

I hate schools that call... that's the worst! I just sit with my cell phone clenched in my hand all day whenever I hear a school is calling people. You never know if you'll get called or when... it's just torture. :confused:

I sure as heck will remember what the acceptance letter will come in now. Its not that difficult...I mean one only needs to remember the letter type/size/thickness for the schools they interviewed at.
I just wish someone would post the acceptance info for dartmouth, northwestern, and wake forest now. :D
 
northwestern comes in a tan envelope that is about 6" x 10" (weird sized envelope). it contains a few sheets of paper. i believe the envelope size is the same as the one the secondary came in.
 
funny thread, but sad at the same time. I always like to come back to these boards to get a little dose of desperation when I'm having trouble getting motivated to study.

For the record, Wake Forest's acceptance is a one sheet deal in a regular business envelope. Of course, so is the wait list. And rejections. So that's pretty useful information.

South Florida called me a few years ago to let me in off the wait list. had to play phone tag for a while which was a bit nerve wracking, but you can be pretty sure they don't call you to let you know you didn't get in. However, if they tell you over the phone when you call "you should hear something in the next few weeks by mail" you know the news is not good. they love to give good news over the phone.

Funny, my Ohio State acceptance came in a letter-sized envelope with only two or three sheets of paper in it.

University of Cincinnati is also a letter-sized envelope, with just two sheets of paper in it - mine was hand-addressed, though.

Waitlist letters...yeah. None of those come in larger envelopes.

for the 2003-2004 year, Wake forest sends thin envelope, 1 sheet of paper!
 
North Dakota's acceptance letter and rejection letter is one page and comes in a standard business envelope. The waitlist letter is two pages and also comes in a standard business envelope.
 
Last year Harvard sent out acceptances in thick envelopes, not thin ones.

For the 2003 entering class that were not large packets (or at least in 8x10 envelopes) among the one's I've gotten:
Jefferson: Small envelope. It was an invitation, actually.
NYU: Thin business envelope. Just one sheet of paper and a small index card. E-mail sent in advance. If not for the e-mail, it can easily seem like a rejection.
