Northwestern vs. Georgetown

Hi guys, I wanted to see if I can get feeback about your experiences/impressions of both or either school. I really was impressed by them both, but obviously for very different reasons, so its a little hard, from my perspective, to do a comparison. Please advise...any feeback would be much appreciated! And does anyone know if Georgetown has a 2nd look weekend?

NO CONTEST = NORTHWESTERN is a far better school. It's got a better rep, more interesting curriculum, many different kinds of hospitals - all of which are EXCELLENT, better research going on. The areas the schools are in are different. I prefer DC, but Chicago's a cool city and NW Med is right in the heart. So buy yourself a coat and a plane ticket and GO TO NORTHWESTERN!!!

Thanks Alice! I totally appreciate your reply. To be honest with you, I couldn't find out much about NUMS's curriculum. Georgetown (as you may have heard) has a really strong personality, which fit mine well, which is why I think it made such a strong impression. I LOVED the hospitals at NUMS.. really impressive, but about the school itself, I didn't feel like I got as good a feel for it. Are you familiar with what stands out about Northwestern's curriculum? If so, please advise... Thanks again for your feedback!

Thanks gel1. Thanks for the imput. I did know this.. about a month ago. It was an interivew heavy and work heavy month and I needed a refresher on details. Plus I feel like I interviewed a quite a few schools that also boasted of the integrated curriculum, very few lecture hours, clinically relevant teaching, etc. I applied to NUMS becuase that appealed to me, but other aspects of other med schools appealed to me as well. G'Town's curriculum didn't really... it was more the overall approach to patient care, their philosophy of training that did. But .. this is what I started the thread for after all, ... to get people's ideas. I wish I could go to the 2nd look, but alas.. I have to work. Other thoughts?

To be honest, I think it'll boils down to what about Northwestern that I don't like but Georgetown has.

The fact that you asked the NWU vs. Georgetown question seems like you do have some answers in mind. If you can try to write them out on the thread, you can see what others think.

you must have really liked something about georgetown to have asked this question....cause most people would pick NU in a second.

I'm going to swim against the tide here and say Georgetown. It's an awesome place to be. Yes, the facilities are kind of lousy, but the clinical training is wonderful. Students place very well in the match. Georgetown is affiliated with numerous hospitals, so you have a lot of different choices for where to do rotations. Also, the students seem really happy.

Plus, you can't beat DC in terms of a city to live in. Some parts of the city are a little expensive to live in, but there is so much to do in the city on a low budget, with the museums, monuments, and plenty of free or reasonably priced performances at the Kennedy Center. Georgetown also has the added benefit of having its medical school and main hospital on the same campus and its undergrad and graduate schools, so you have lots more opportunities to get involved and meet people.

Either way, I hope you choose the place you feel matches your personality the most. Good luck with your decision - go with your gut!

we got that stuff covered at NU, plus we have better facilities.

I agree with UCLAman, choose Georgetown only if something unique about it appeals to you (Like location in DC, whatever other factors)

hehe...gotta represent here.

i agree...if theres something unique about georgetown(like dc) that the op likes then those are valid reasons. i just wanted to point out that our match list is at the very least equal to georgetown's and our facilities are better and the students are happy here too.

i couldnt argue with the dc stuff so i didnt quote it. the city choice is personal preference.

this is a no brainer. go to northwestern.

Hey you never know, so people actually like the ABCDEFG whatever grading b/c if they do well, it distinguish them more from others. (gunners...)

Northwestern is ranked a good bit higher, so if the financial aid packages are similar and there isn't anything in particular about gtown that you love I'd probably go to Northwestern.

Honestly, the match lists for schools out out of the top 10 or so are all pretty similar. If you want a bigtime residency it's possible from any allopathic medical school, but you may have to work harder. Just don't think that Northwestern provides some huge advantage over Gtwon in the match because it's ranked much higher; you're going to be judged on board scores, clinical grades, lor's, etc at both schools.

I go with on NU on this one. It's a great school in a great location and you'll really benefit from the reputation of the school. NU is a powerhouse in the midwest (U of Chicago defintely poses a threat...but I think NU and UMich are comparable) and you'll basically have your choice of residency after you finish there. Georgetown is also a good school so you really can't go wrong really. Whichever one you choose, good luck!

haha yeah i nkow. i didnt mean that H/HP/P/F at GU meant he should go to NU. Those two sentences werent related.
