*Official* "IM Interviews Offered" Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Have been lurking for a while.

I am a foreigner in need of a visa. (which puts me at a significant disadvantage)
Decent school
Step I = 240
Step 2 = not taken
Never honored any class or rotation
~Bottom quartile of class (definitely below avg)
Of course not AOA
Research: no med school pubs. Undergrad pubs: blood (cover page), American Journal of Respiratory Physiology

Interviews so far:

Baylor
Vanderbilt
Brown
Mayo, Rochester
Northwestern
Univ of Washington
Emory
UPitt
Dartmouth
Tufts

Rejection: UVA (no visa)
Still waiting to hear from >15 schools

wow christ, are you seriously going to interview at all these schools? how about you leave some for the rest of us ;)

I am couples matching. She is a way better applicant than me (and generally a better person as well) so I am applying to a crap load of programs. I still have not Heard from a bunch. UCSD, UCSF, Colorado. Which of course is we would like to end up.
I probably will not interview at all of the rest I did not cancel.
And I think there are plenty of interviews to go around :)

I have been lurking for a while too. I hope this is useful. I'm hoping it'll encourage people, because in general I think my application kinda stinks.

My stats:

Probably in the bottom 25%
Clinical: Pass in surgery and peds, High pass in medicine, primary care, and psych, honors in ob/gyn
step1: 221
step2 CS: passed
step2 CK: I took it and released my scores, but for some reason I have not received my score report, despite my requesting it three times. But I guess since I've gotten interviews, I must have passed.
Pubs: One abstract in undergrad...I was the 4th author
Interesting extracurricular activities: I had two kids in medical school.
Not AOA, not even close

On top of this, to this day I STILL have an incomplete application because one of my LORs has not been uploaded.

So here's my list:
Yale-New Haven, primary care
U Conn, primary care
Dartmouth
Vermont
West Virginia
Maryland
George Washington
Brown
Penn-State (Hershey)
Geisenger (PA)

I also got interviews at Franklin Square and Hopkins/Sinai in Baltimore, but I have declined.

Rejected from UNC Chapel Hill. I missed their 11/1 deadline, not that they would have interviewed me anyway.

Waiting to hear from Hopkins Bayview, Pittsburgh, Virginia, Beth Israel, U Mass, Baystate, and a few others that I'm not necessarily excited about. I applied to 22 schools total, but I think it was overkill.

step 1 246, won't take step 2 for a few months.
top 30-or-so% at a top 5-10 school. got honors in medicine, psych, and neuro, also got honors in all of my medicine electives this year.

Thanks again

To my knowledge, the "open house" is the invitation that everyone has received, and it is the same thing as an interview offer. Not sure why they are calling it that.

I didn't apply to Cedars-Sinai, but both UW and UCLA also used the "Open House" term to refer to their interview dates. Seems to be a West Coast thing. I think it's done in an effort to sound more welcoming and less intimidating, but who knows.

thanks,
thanks, I'll pm you my stats. people at my school have figured out my user name (kind of obvious if you know me) so i'd rather not make an anouncement to my class about my stats

Did the Stanford, UPenn and NYU interview invites all come through e-mail/ERAS, or ERAS only? Thanks.

Can anyone post the dates available to interview at Baylor in January? Thanks. :)

That's Baylor in Houston. :p

So I've been reading this for a while and finally decided that I'm so freaking out that I just have to post.

First to answer your question...
Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays in January are the dates for interviewing at Baylor (based on availability of course).

So far I've received interviews from Emory, U Colorado, and Baylor, basically within hours-days of submitting my application in September. Since then, nada. I'm waiting on Columbia, Cornell, NYU, Mt Sinai, BW, MGH, UCSF, UCSD, and UW.

My stats are:
Step 1: 248 (no step 2 yet)
Honors in all clinical rotations except Surgery (pass)
excellent LOR
minimal research
nominated for AOA at top 15 school.

So what went wrong? I know that the remaining programs are competitive and all, but aren't I competitive? I was hoping for some love post-dean's letter release, but still a week later my mailbox is empty!

quidnunc said:

NYU came through both e-mail and ERAS.

I'll have to let others tell you about Stanford since they (along with Columbia and UCSF) apparently don't care for my HP in Medicine. :( I feel like the lack of invites from these competitive programs does not bode well for BWH/MGH...

it seems more IMGs are getting interviews than aMGs? what gives?

InternalWhizzzz said:

The IMG's applied to many more programs than the AMG's, and the interviews they are getting are (for the most part) at less competitive programs.

BID today.

UTSW
Colorado
Baylor
Providence St. Vincent
Duke
UW
Providence Portland
Mt. Sinai

thanks for the s upport :) but have you looked at some of their interviews? Mt. Sinai, Albert Einstein, Stonybrook, Yale and Emory?

those programs aren't exactly shabby :(

I did look at their interview thread before I replied, and while the programs listed may very well have excellent training (I don't know much about most of them), what I was referring to was how competitive those programs are. This is really the deciding factor in getting interviews and is not necessarily directly correlated with program quality.

In regards to your specific examples (since I have far too much time on my hands :) ): the Yale on the IMG list is not the main program but an affiliate at Bridgeport. The Mt. Sinai on the IMG list is the one in FL, not the one in NYC. Emory is not on the IMG thread at all, and Stonybrook and Einstein, though they may be very solid programs, are not highly competitive. Again, these may all be great programs, but it is simply not as hard to get an interview at them than at most programs you see listed on the AMG thread.

I am not trying to demean the IMG's interview lists and in fact I agree with your observation that they are longer than those of most AMG's. I'm just replying to your question regarding why this discrepancy exists.

UPenn and Stanford used ERAS with the forward to my email account, too. No clue about NYU though - apparently I didn't make their cut?

Updated list:
Medical College of Georgia (9/15)
Wake Forest (9/15)
Emory (9/15)
GWU (9/28)
Washington University (10/3)
Georgetown (10/7)
Vanderbilt (10/10)
Thomas Jefferson (10/10)
UVA (10/13)
UAB (10/17)
University of Chicago (10/17)
Duke (10/20)
Northwestern (10/21)
Yale (10/21)
Columbia (10/24)
Brown (10/27)
UNC (11/1)
UPenn (11/7)
Stanford (11/7)

And no, I don't intend on going to them all - will probably weed the list down to about 10 or so.

There is just no rhyme or reason to this process. Why would I get NYU and Duke but not Columbia, Stanford or even UC Davis, while others are in the exact opposite position? It just doesn't make any sense. And then you have GIMed, who has great stats and on paper should be getting interviews from a bunch of places and isn't.

I knew going into it that it would be like this, but somehow I'm still surprised at how random it all seems. It would almost be better if I didn't check out this site so much - now if I get an invite from Columbia I'll feel like I was an afterthought or something, instead of just being excited about it.

UPenn yesterday. Boston University today :)

Updated List:

Temple
Jefferson
UPenn
Michigan
Univ of Chicago
Northwestern
Maryland
Tufts
Boston Univ
Pittsburgh
Cedars Sinai
UConn

Still waiting on 16 others!!
