The Official UC Irvine Countdown Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm not sure what you mean by "enroll." You won't be kicked off the waitlist automatically regardless, but what will happen once you begin classes is that if Irvine is thinking of pulling you off their list, they'll contact the school you're currently holding. If that school says they've begun classes, then they won't make the offer. Check the AAMC traffic rules.

Regarding the issue of holding waitlists until once is accepted, Gayle e-mailed me today and told me that attending the summer pre-mat program will not count as matriculating into medical school. For UCI this counts once one begins the orientation program on August 28. Therefore, for those of us attending the program this summer, we can still keep whatever other waitlists we still have. :D

To all UCI acceptees: were you accepted to any other UC????
My observation is that very very few people get accepted to only one UC. So, on the other side, if you don't receive love from one UC, it's very likely that you don't have it from any UC. (I'm afraid that I belong to this category. and start to lose hope. )

I was also accepted to Davis. I'm guessing Davis and Irvine probably make a common acceptance pair.

Like none, I was also accepted to Davis. I haven't heard from UCLA/Drew yet...
Good luck to everyone still waiting to hear!

Good luck on the waiting list everyone,

I talked to Gayle last week and asked about the possibility of reapplying while on waitlist (since I didn't get in anywhere). She told me to get the app ready and if I don't hear back by July, go ahead and hit submit. Not as encouraging as I hoped. But maybe this means something, though my student interviewer told me he was pulled off in the middle of July. Could it be that they're nearly done and given the weird year, don't plan on accepting anymore?

Have your written a letter of intent to UCI? If you haven't I definitely think that you should. Other than that all you can do is wait. I wish you luck. :)

Sammmeyeam I just PM'd you.

bumpin' it up! :D

Hi all;
I'm just wondering if you all have received the "Alternate Contact List" e-mail from UCI.
I got it about 3 days ago.

bumping!!!!
guys and gals: any news lately??? no matter how small it is

Hmmmm, I haven't received ANY emails from UCI yet. I was put on the waitlist in March. Has everyone received a ranked alternate list? Damn UCI is slow in getting there act together.

Grumpy

congrats to all those accepted.
could someone please post UCI's secondary app questions? thank you. :)

Sure thing. Do you want my responses too, considering I got accepted. Just PM me if you want to see them.

1) Discuss what you consider your personal strength and weakness.

2) Suppose that you have a background and personal history similar to another applicant. However, when the Admissions Committee reviews your file, they find that you have accomplishments & characteristics that distinguish you from other applicants. What are those?

3) Tell us about a challenge you have overcome and what you learned about yourself from that experience.

excellent! thanks so much kazaar! i'm going to attempt to answer these questions myself. if you don't mind, i may PM you after i do mine just to see what UCI adcom likes. congrats on your acceptance!

•Hi all;
I'm just wondering if you all have received the "Alternate Contact List" e-mail from UCI.
I got it about 3 days ago.•••••what is the alternate contact list?

The waitlist/alternate list is moving. I received a phone call from Dr. Peterson today (June 26, 2002) informing me of my acceptance to the UC Irvine College of Medicine. Dr. Peterson told me that she read/looked over the many supplementary letters I sent. (NOTE: I did not send in a letter of intent. Instead, I wrote non-binding letters of interest.) She is a very kind woman.

In case you are wondering, I interviewed on April 25, 2002 and received an e-mail on May 14, 2002 telling me that I was selected as an alternate. On June 17, 2002, I received an e-mail from the Admissions Office requesting that I submit updated contact information, which I did very promptly (within a few minutes of receiving the e-mail). I hope this information helps!

I am not sure yet if I will be attending in the fall. I am deciding between here and Northwestern. Any advice? I have two weeks to decide. I am also hoping I am taken off the alternate list at UC San Diego, which is my top choice. I will be sure to let all of you know what I ultimately decide (if, of course, you even care). Good luck to all those who are still waiting!

Well, I'd stay in CA, but then I've already made that decision. It wasn't over Northwestern though. It was over Mount Sinai and Iowa.

congrats CA!

MANY MANY CONGRATSSSSS!!! California, you very much deserve it
For those who are interested, I copy the "alternate contact" e-mail here. The title of the e-mail was "UCIrvine information"
It seems to me that California received the same e-mail. Is it true, California?

I just want to thank everyone for your support and encouragement, especially UC Lover, Hawkeyes, Watcha, and Matthew. I am pulling for all those who are still on the waitlist! Feel free to PM me if you have any questions about UC Irvine's specific process; however, I am no expert nor do I claim to be. The medical school application process, in general, is very random and, honestly, I don't know why I was taken off the waitlist when many of you are probably more deserving. Don't get me wrong, though, I worked my ass off for this day to come.

I did, in fact, receive the e-mail that asked for updated confact information. As I said previously, I replied right away. On a side note, I walked over to the Admissions Office (Med. Educ. Bldg. 802) yesterday to pick up my acceptance packet. My packet was in a stack of ten others so the waitlist is really moving!

Again, thanks everyone for all of your help. And, by the way, I have pretty much decided that I am heading to UC Irvine (although I am still *kind* of holding out for UCSD if I am fortunate enough to be pulled from the alternate list; UC Irvine vs. UCSD is a very tough call). Good luck!

That's wonderful! I'll see you in the fall and try to get SD out of your head...it's an ultra-competitive, scary place.

Congratulations California! Welcome aboard!

California, congrats on your recent acceptance. My acceptance package must have been among the stack of 10. :) For some of you wondering: I interviewed on 3-21, *forget the hold notification* got immediately placed on the alternate list sometime in mid May, then received an unofficial "email" acceptance notification on 6-17 from Dr. Goldin, the MSTP director and received the official package yesterday. The waitlist's definitely moving. While I was joyous over my acceptance to both the MD and MST programs, I have to say the past two weeks've been quite stressful. It's been a tough call to decide between Davis and Irvine cuz both are great. While I'm still holding onto my spot on the UCLA waitlist, I'm happy to share with you of my final decison to attend UCI. Many of your comments/insights about the school in this thread have been very helpful in narrowing down my choice. Thank you, and I'm very looking to meeting ya all this fall. --PW :)

Congrats Patiently Waiting and California! I look forward to seeing you guys in the fall! I'm in Irvine all summer so if you need anybody to show you around (and this also goes for anybody else interested in or attending UCI), just give me a PM.

We're gonna rule this school!! Oh, wait, this isn't an 80's highschool movie... dammit. Nevermind.

This is a bit depressing.... just spoke with an on-campus housing staff and was told that there's about 15-18 months of waiting AND off-campus housings typically run at the price of $1200-$1400. By no means am I considering an option to live alone cuz it's TOO costly, but what do I do now? Should I contact Gayle for shared-housing info??

california -- I haven't checked non-UCSD/UCLA threads for what seems forever, until I read this one, and it turns out you got in! wooohoooo. dude, that rocks. You, of all people, deserve to stay in california, with your persistance. come to mention it, hm... your sdn name is a good reason too.. haha.. UCI is truly a great spot.

patientlywaiting -- also, congrats! who needs UCLA :D

oh yeah, welcome to orange county. I've spent a good 10 years or so here (before college), so if you aren't familiar with the place, maybe I can give you some pointers. Don't believe any of the stereotypes you hear about orange county, btw. Just like San Francisco isn't full of hippies and AIDS/crack-addicts, OC isn't all suburbian blight either. Just one look at the 10 different races in the UCI ER or the abundance of fun things to do along the coast should convince you of that. :D

See you guys in the Fall too!

But if you want to get together during summer, send email to [email protected]. I am also a fellow Oc-er! wooohooo!!!

congrats california!!!!

I told you that you would get in  it was just a matter of time! :D

who knows...maybe if you keep trying, UCSD will be around the corner!

I wish you the best, but I have a question, are you going to go to northwestern or UCI now? because I know UCSD was ur first choice!

best of luck with UCSD, don't worry, that will prolly happen soon to....cross the fingers, and keep on using that charm :p

As always, thank you for the support Watcha and Matthew (as well as anyone else I have missed). I am very happy I get to stay in California with all of you intelligent, kind, and friendly *soon-to-be* doctors.

Watcha, in regards to your question, I have decided to go to UC Irvine because it is so much cheaper than Northwestern. In my humble opinion, the quality of education at UC Irvine and Northwestern is very comparable. I concede Northwestern is more prestigious; however, I think I can get to the *place* I want to be regardless of which school I choose. And, yes, you were right! I just needed to be patient. I will try to work my charm with UCSD, but I think UC Irvine is the best fit for me. It'll be nice, though, to be able to actually choose between UC Irvine and UCSD. And, besides, I GET TO BE YOUR CLASSMATE at UC Irvine! AWESOME! (I am still embarassed, though, about how I reacted during our little run-in. Sorry.)

Anyway, I just want to mention to all those who are concerned (mostly, Patiently Waiting) what I heard/read about the campus housing situation. If you are persistent and show a *real* reason for needing to live in campus housing, then you will get it within a few months. For example, a Northern Californian would have greater preference than a local (i.e, person from Orange County) by housing officials to be taken off the waitlist. Again, this is what I heard/read.

Take care everyone and I look forward to seeing all of you soon. By the way, how is the Summer Pre-Entry Program going? Are all of you finding it useful? Let me know.

Your Buddy,
California

Watcha, you going to UCI?

Thanks Matthew and California for all your input. :)

Matthew, will definitely ask for the pointers you mention when I get back from vacation. :D

California, persistence doesn't seem to work for housing. There's simply no available spot left, and the housing staff told me that no preference's given even if I'm coming from miles away. All I've got from them is a meek reply of "uh, sorry". I think I'm gonna start contacting some of the current students. :(

Any particular website or local newspaper to recommend?

hi all,
just wanted to say i was one of the many accepted from the waitlist on june 26th.
i interviewed in february.
i had the worse interview at uci because the faculty was really arrogant. I didnt send anything (updated transcript) even though they asked. they never asked me for updated contact info. i never sent them any letters or updates. i happened to have a letter of rec sent to them because one of my professor sent it to all the schools i was waitlisted at. two weeks after that letter, i was accepted. i had the best interview at ucsf, everything that can happen positively happened on that day, and i was rejected (go figure the randomness of all of this). this is my first acceptance (i was huggin all my family members when i received it).
i dont know how i got in uci because of my horrible interview and i didnt send any transcripts or updates, but i did. i dont understand it. however, i am grateful and enthusiastic about going to medical school in my home state.
for those still on the waitlist, there's still hope for my spot. if i get into ucla from the waitlist, i will definitely go because it's my alma mater. that's the only school i'll go for, so let's hope i do. : )
btw, waitingpatiently, what other schools did you get into for mstp? are you applying for mstp at ucla?

Congradulatoins yaoming!

I hope to see you in the fall, but if you get into UCLA then kiss off! ;)

I hear UCI accepts 20% of the class in the summer, so nobody should give up hope yet, and yaoming is proof.

BTW, UCI has a great anatomy program (I am doing the summer program now). The teachers know their stuff and you really get in down and dirty. If anybody has any questions about anatomy at UCI, like about the teachers, grading, etc, just ask.

yaoming, congratulation! See you in August! :)

I got in  !!!

I interviewed April 25, waitlisted May 16 and accepted July 16. I sent in updated transcripts, extra letters of reccomendation and a letter on intention. I guess its worked out, but I was trying real hard not to sweat it since the med student who put me up the night before the interview told me he underwent the same scenario and got in mid-July. Wish I had more info for those still waiting, but keep your spirits up, you too can still make it this year.

Congratulatoin md_student2b!

See you in the fall! :D

For those of you who got into UCI, what is the financial aid package offered by UCI School of Med?

I'm also head to UCI in the fall. See you all there.

altaskier
:)

To Kazzar, none, Aria111, Dr. Happy, McEntrye, aesculapian:

Would any of you please let me know what kind of financial aid package UCI gives out to med students.

Many thanks

UCI has a very standard financial aid package from what I can tell:
Rec/fed Direct Loan $8,500
Rec Unsub Fed Dir Ln $12,746
Rec Unsub-O Fd Loan $4,118
Total $25,364
That is for on-campus living. I imagine they'd have to offer considerably more for off-campus dwellers.

Hello none,

Thank you very much for replying to my post. I have 2 more questions:

1/ Based on your reply, is it correct to assume that UCI gives out NO GRANT and NO SCHOLARSHIP in the standard financial aid package?

2/ What does "O Fd" stand for in "Unsub-O Fd Loan $4,118"?

Thanks

It's a public school. The tuition is less than a 1/3 that of private schools. In fact, it may very well be the lowest tuition in the country. As far as I know, they don't supplement this already very, very low tuition with grants. I don't know what the O stands for...perhaps "outside?"
