There are 4 main psychodynamic theories, but all have similarities with regard to key concepts: the presence and influence of the unconscious, the influence of childhood experiences with caretakers, and set stages of personality development.
Drive theory is closest to psychoanalytic theory. It emphasizes pleasurable and aggressive drives. A second is ego psychology, with an emphasis on the ability of the ego to regulate and control drives. A third is object relations theory, which focuses on the quality of primary objects (people) in early development and the effect of this on ego development. The fourth is self psychology, which emphasizes the development of the self from a primary social (relationship) context and secondarily from a biological drive orientation.
