Im an older non trad applicant looking for some school list help. This will be my first cycle.
Background:
-32yo ORM, no family members in medicine
-Bachelors in 2016 from small SUNY
-Masters in 2023
Location:
-NY resident with strong ties to NJ and ties to NC and GA
Stats:
-525 MCAT
-3.49 ugpa
-3.92 DIY postbacc gpa
-3.90 MS gpa
Low ugpa is due to my partner at the time becoming pregnant when I was 21. School took a backseat as I worked full time to provide for us. Not an excuse just an explanation.
Research:
-800 hours, one poster presentation.
Clinical:
-Paramedic (2 years FT, 2 years PT), EMT 1.5 years FT, ED volunteering 400 hours
Non-Clinical Volunteering:
-3+ years doing weekends and events at a local addiction recovery outreach. The group is focused on using fitness as a path to recovery and houses a decent sized gym as well as a hangout area to provide a safe space. Good friend passed away due to addiction so I'm very passionate about this. Helped organize some of our annual events/fundraisers.
Shadowing:
-150 hours, Orthopedic Surgery, Pediatrics, Cardiology.
Hobbies:
-Competitive Bodybuilding (competed at national level shows)
-Volunteering at local cat shelters
Other Employment:
-3 years working for my family's small business
-3 years in a group home working with adults with developmental disabilities
Why Med School: In 2018 my younger brother suffered a heart attack while playing basketball, the incident inspired me to become a paramedic. The struggles my brother endured thereafter dealing with ever changing diagnoses due to the rarity of his combination of conditions led me to pursue the necessary experiences to gain admission to med school.
