i have a different opinion. i spent a month at BWH, and hated it. I felt that there teaching was poor, lectures were almost non existant with the exception of grandrounds, and i was fortunate to attend a meeting where the PD chastized residents for doing so poorly percentile wise on in-service...

The other item to consider is that VA hosp. hours are often significantly less than normal hospitals. I have a friend who is an internist at a VA clinic...7-5, mon-fri, no call, no beeper, and no weekends. But he only makes 90k when he could make almost double in private practice.

At the hospital I rotated at, Anesthesia residents respond to every code blue. Their job is to get the airway secure, and then only do they start to respond to real reason for the code, whether it is necessity for a line/drugs, etc. Pretty exciting if you ask me.

I would wholeheartedly do a residency at Baystate, it's a great hospital and program in just a bad area. Bad area meaning, there isn't a whole lot to do. I don't know much about Columbia, but NYU tends to be malignant. That said, the director of Perinatology at Bellevue will be my former attending from Tufts that is a phenomenal person and teacher. If I decide to go into OB, I will be applying to NYU.
