About the School

The mission of the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine and School of Pharmacy is to prepare students to become osteopathic physicians and pharmacy practitioners through programs of excellence in education, research, clinical care, and community service to enhance the quality of life through improved health for all humanity. The primary goal of LECOM is to educate students to become physicians practicing within the osteopathic concept. A secondary goal of the College is to educate and develop primary care physicians who will practice in the osteopathic tradition. The College imparts to its students a firm academic background enabling them to pursue advanced training in other fields of osteopathic medicine as well as primary care. The College encourages its students to participate in research to further advance their chosen profession.

Curriculum

The Problem-Based Learning Pathway (PBLP) at LECOM emphasizes student-centered, self-directed learning. Groups of eight students meet with a faculty facilitator two to three times per week. Faculty members do not "teach" in the traditional sense. Instead, they serve as facilitators. A series of cases focus on learning the basic sciences required to understand patient problems. Students then work independently and in small groups on learning issues before the next meeting, at which time the new information is discussed and refined in the context of the case."

Facilities

LECOM has constructed a 109,000 square foot building for the Florida campus. Classrooms will use the latest in smart-lecture hall technology with all A/V controls at the professor`s lectern. Small study halls provide meeting space where PBL groups meet to solve the problems presented by the patient cases. The Learning Resource Center has easy access to medical journals, texts and other library material. The new Florida Campus includes a wireless computer network so that anywhere on campus students can connect to lecture notes and presentations. Anatomy remains a key element of osteopathic medical training, and at the LECOM Bradenton, the anatomy lab offers prosections of cadavers, along with the latest in plastinated, human-anatomical specimens. This multi-purpose laboratory also provides learning and study facilities for microbiology and other basic sciences.
