School Info

The school's unique curriculum and teaching methods emphasize cutting-edge technology and individualized, active, self-directed learning. In addition, students spend three of their four years of training in community health centers located in underserved communities across the country.

Curriculum

ATSU-SOMA has partnerships with the nation's Community Health Centers (CHC), which provide a healthcare safety net for underserved communities. SOMA students will begin their clinical observations in CHCs at the start of their second year instead of waiting until the third year as in traditional models. Parts of the basic sciences will be bundled with clinical sciences and learned together. This practice of learning skills in the same environment in which they will be applied is called contextual learning. This has been shown to be more effective than methods that impose arbitrary educational divisions.

Another unique aspect is the incorporation of the Clinical Presentation Model, which holds that there are approximately 120 different ways that patients present to physicians. Students will learn in-depth responses to these presentations.

Facilities

Students spend their first year on the Mesa, Arizona, Campus learning together in small groups using real-life patient interactions and simulated clinical experiences. Students education in years two through four is based at one of the 11 select community campuses across the country. The second year is spent in small group settings learning additional clinical presentations, observing patient care, and gaining an understanding of the local health system and community health practices. Third- and fourth-year students complete their clinical rotations at Community Health Center campuses and associated hospitals, as well as with healthcare providers and at select healthcare institutions. Osteopathic principles and practices are integrated throughout the curriculum, and the osteopathic manipulative treatment program is designed for primary care applications. This provides distinctive training in the value of healing touch in patient care.

"The entire admin is *metaphorically* in bed with each other. They don't listen to students, pretend to care about the mental health of students (but really don't....just watch another wellness lecture!), and are completely destroying the school. About the LizzyM Score

LizzyM, SDN Moderator and medical school admissions committee member, is the inventor of the LizzyM Score. The score allows you to see if you are a competitive applicant at a given school. If your LizzyM Score is far below or above the average, you may not be a good fit. If your score is far below, your application may be screened out due to numerical cutoffs. If it is far above, the school may assume they are your “safety” school and that you won’t attend if they offer an acceptance. This score should be used only as a guide to help you select schools and is not a guarantee of acceptance at any school. If you use this as your sole criteria to select medical schools to apply to, you don’t deserve to get in anyway.
