Established in 1811, The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University is the third-oldest medical school in New England. After a period of suspension in the 19th century, the medical program was re-established in 1972 and has since evolved into a leading institution for medical education. Located in Providence, Rhode Island, the school is part of Brown University’s Division of Biology and Medicine and is fully accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) . The medical school admits approximately 144 students annually through various pathways, including the highly selective Program in Liberal Medical Education (PLME), which offers a combined undergraduate and medical school curriculum.

Curriculum

The Warren Alpert Medical School offers a competency-based curriculum designed to integrate medical knowledge with clinical practice. The pre-clerkship phase spans 17 months and includes the Integrated Medical Sciences (IMS) courses, which cover subjects such as anatomy, histology, genetics, physiology, pathophysiology, pathology, and pharmacology . This phase also incorporates the Doctoring course and a two-week Clinical Skills Clerkship to prepare students for clinical rotations . During the third and fourth years, students engage in six core clerkships and various electives at Brown-affiliated hospitals, gaining hands-on experience in diverse medical settings . The medical school is housed in a renovated 134,000-square-foot facility located at 222 Richmond Street in Providence’s historic Jewelry District.
