About the School

Cooper Medical School of Rowan University (CMSRU), established in 2012, is a public medical school located in Camden, New Jersey. It was formed through a partnership between Rowan University and Cooper University Health Care to address the regional and national physician shortage. CMSRU is the first new medical school in New Jersey in over 35 years and the only four-year MD-granting institution in South Jersey. The school is committed to developing highly skilled and socially conscious physician leaders who value a patient-centered, team-based approach to healthcare.

Curriculum

CMSRU's curriculum emphasizes small-group, self-directed learning with early and continuous patient care experiences. Students begin clinical exposure in the third week of medical school at the Cooper Rowan Clinic. The program includes a service-learning component, integrating community engagement into medical education. The curriculum is designed to prepare students to be excellent physicians, strong patient advocates, community leaders, critical thinkers, and lifelong learners.

CMSRU offers a three-year MD track for primary care specialties: Family Medicine, Primary Care Internal Medicine, or Primary Care Pediatrics. Following acceptance to CMSRU, interested candidates should submit an application to the PC3 track.

Facilities

The CMSRU Medical Education Building, located at the corner of Broadway and Benson Streets in Camden, is a six-story, LEED Gold-certified facility. It features a 260-seat auditorium, a 140-seat multipurpose room, 25 active learning rooms, a clinical simulation center, and a satellite medical library. In 2019, the Clinical Skills & Simulation Center was relocated to the newly constructed Joint Health Sciences Center, a collaborative space shared with Rowan University, Rutgers University-Camden, and Camden County College.
