Founded in 1824, Sidney Kimmel Medical College (formerly Jefferson Medical College) is one of the oldest and most prolific private medical schools in the United States, having awarded over 31,000 medical degrees and boasting more living graduates than any other private medical school in the nation . Located in Center City Philadelphia, SKMC is part of Thomas Jefferson University and enrolls more than 1,000 students annually across its MD and joint degree programs . Curriculum
SKMC’s medical education is structured around the JeffMD curriculum, a 45-month, on-campus program designed to integrate foundational science, clinical experience, and professional development . The curriculum is divided into three phases: Phase 1 (21 months) focuses on basic science and foundational clinical science, with early clinical exposure and scholarly inquiry ; Phase 2 (12 months) is the core clerkship year, offering clinical rotations across various hospitals ; and Phase 3 (12 months) includes advanced clinical rotations and preparation for residency . Throughout the curriculum, students engage in longitudinal “Threads” such as Clinical Skills, Health Systems Science, Professionalism/Ethics, and Wellness . Additionally, Scholarly Inquiry is a required component, providing students with skills and experience to become critical consumers and producers of medical knowledge.
Facilities
SKMC students have access to a wide array of facilities and laboratories that support both education and research. The university’s shared research facilities include high-speed centrifuges, ultracentrifuges, scintillation counters, incubators, shakers, spectrophotometers, and gel imaging systems .
