About the School

The University of Louisville School of Medicine, established in 1837 as the Louisville Medical Institute, is among the oldest medical schools in North America. Located in Louisville, Kentucky, it operates as a public institution within the University of Louisville system. The school has a rich history of medical innovations, including the first implantation of a fully self-contained artificial heart and the first successful hand transplant in the world.

Curriculum

The School of Medicine offers several dual degree programs, including MD/MS, MD/MA, MD/MBA, MD/MPH, and MD/PhD degrees. For the 2017 entering class, 162 students enrolled in the Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) program.

Facilities

The Health Sciences Center, established in the 1960s, encompasses over 200,000 square feet of state-of-the-art research facilities, a standardized patient clinic, and one of the largest academic medical simulation centers in the United States. The campus is in close proximity to several hospitals, including University of Louisville Hospital, Jewish Hospital, and Norton Children's Hospital, providing students with diverse clinical rotation opportunities.

Demographics

The School of Medicine enrolls approximately 630 students. The general applicant pool has become increasingly competitive, with Kentucky residents selected for 120 of the approximately 155 seats in the program each year. Out-of-state seats are awarded to those with superior academic achievement, MCAT scores, research, community service, and/or ties to Kentucky.
