About the School

The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) College of Medicine, established in 1879, is the state's only comprehensive health sciences university. It has educated and trained over 11,000 physicians since its inception. The college operates on two campuses: the main campus in Little Rock and a regional campus in Fayetteville. UAMS is affiliated with several major healthcare institutions, including UAMS Medical Center, Arkansas Children's Hospital, and the Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System. The college offers a traditional four-year M.D. program and a three-year accelerated M.D. track at the Northwest Regional Campus for students committed to primary care.

Curriculum

The UAMS College of Medicine provides a student-centered, active-learning curriculum designed to foster critical thinking. The program includes seven Academic Houses that offer academic and career advising, peer mentoring, and a sense of community. Approximately 700 medical students are enrolled across the two campuses, with a freshman class size of 175. The college also offers over 65 ACGME-accredited residency and fellowship programs, accommodating about 700 residents and fellows. Additionally, the Medical Scholars in Public Health post-baccalaureate program allows students to work toward a Master's in Public Health while preparing for future medical school applications.

Facilities

The UAMS campus in Little Rock spans over 84 acres and includes more than 5.2 million square feet of buildings. The UAMS Medical Center, a 553,282-square-foot facility, features 332 adult beds and 64 neonatal beds. The campus also houses seven institutes that integrate clinical care, research, and education. In 2023, UAMS opened The Orthopaedic & Spine Hospital with 24 private rooms for inpatient stays. The Proton Center of Arkansas, the state's first proton therapy center, opened in September 2023, offering advanced cancer radiation treatment.

Demographics

As of Fall 2024, UAMS enrolled 3,485 students across its colleges, including 706 in the College of Medicine. The student body comprises approximately 2,005 female and 902 male students. Racial demographics include 1,991 White, 279 Black or African American, 215 Asian, 170 Hispanic, 86 Multi-Ethnic, 76 International, 72 Unknown, and 4 Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander students. The faculty consists of nearly 2,200 members, with a diverse composition of 3,586 White, 933 Black or African American, 319 Asian, 70 Multi-Ethnic, and 16 Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander individuals.
