About the School

The Tilman J. Fertitta Family College of Medicine at the University of Houston, established in 2019, is dedicated to improving health care in underserved urban and rural communities across Texas. Fertitta following a $50 million donation from his family. Curriculum

The curriculum at the Fertitta Family College of Medicine is designed to address the shortage of primary care physicians and to improve health outcomes by focusing on prevention and the social determinants of health. Students engage in "Longitudinal Primary Care" on a weekly basis at assigned primary care clinics, gaining hands-on experience under faculty supervision. The program also includes interdisciplinary research opportunities aimed at finding innovative solutions to health care challenges.

Facilities

In the summer of 2022, the college opened a state-of-the-art, three-story, 130,000-square-foot facility situated on 43 acres along Martin Luther King Boulevard, near the main University of Houston campus. This $80 million building features modern classrooms, meeting spaces, research areas, and advanced anatomy and simulation suites. Notable amenities include a 128-seat Sky Box Lecture Hall, a simulation center with clinical skills exam rooms and simulated hospital rooms, and an Active Learning Classroom open to the public for community events. The facility also incorporates sustainable design elements, such as the use of reclaimed wood from 18 willow oak trees that were repurposed into furniture and fixtures throughout the building.

Demographics

The inaugural class of the Fertitta Family College of Medicine comprised 30 students, with 73% identifying as underrepresented minorities in medicine, 63% female, 57% first-generation college students, and 40% from low socioeconomic backgrounds. All members of this class were Texas residents, including 13 from Houston. The college's commitment to diversity and inclusion is reflected in its mission to educate physicians who are representative of the communities they serve, thereby addressing health disparities and improving access to care in underserved areas.
