About the School

The Cumming School of Medicine (CSM) at the University of Calgary, established in 1967 and renamed in 2014, is one of two medical schools in Alberta and among 17 in Canada. It offers a three-year Doctor of Medicine (MD) program, distinguishing itself as one of the few institutions in North America with such a structure. The school also provides undergraduate degrees in Health Sciences and Community Rehabilitation and Disability Studies. CSM is affiliated with several hospitals within the Alberta Health Services system, including Foothills Medical Centre, Alberta Children's Hospital, Rockyview General Hospital, and Chinook Regional Hospital.

Curriculum

The MD program at CSM is divided into two components: Pre-clerkship and Clerkship. The Pre-clerkship curriculum is designed around four foundational principles: spirality, generalism, health equity and structural competence, and patient-centeredness. A spiral curriculum allows key concepts to be revisited with increasing complexity, ensuring comprehensive understanding. Additionally, a longitudinal course focused on professional development enables students to explore clinical and scholarly areas of interest, emphasizing service to the communities they will serve.

Facilities

CSM boasts several advanced research facilities that support its educational and research missions. The Advanced Imaging and Microscopy (AIM) Network provides a suite of optical microscopy core facilities and expertise. The Centre for Advanced Technologies offers essential technologies to support contemporary biomedical research across diverse areas. The Centre for Health Informatics focuses on advancing health informatics research and training for precision medicine and precision public health. Additionally, the Heritage Medical Research Clinic merges patient care with ambulatory clinical trials, facilitating translational research.
