About the School

The F. Edward Hébert School of Medicine at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USU) was established in 1972 to ensure a steady supply of physician-leaders for the U.S. military and Public Health Service. Located in Bethesda, Maryland, on the Naval Support Activity Bethesda campus, USU shares its grounds with the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. The university offers a comprehensive curriculum that integrates basic sciences, innovative research, leadership training, and clinical practice, preparing graduates to address complex medical and public health challenges both domestically and internationally.

Curriculum

The curriculum at USU's School of Medicine is uniquely tailored to military medicine, beginning with 1.5 years of basic sciences organized into organ-system-based modules called "Molecules to Military Medicine." This is followed by courses in parasitology, combat medical skills, military medical history, officer professional development, military applied physiology, and epidemiology. Clerkships commence in January of the second year, followed by the USMLE Step 1 examination. Subsequent training includes advanced didactic modules and further clerkships at various military hospitals nationwide.

Facilities

USU's campus is situated on the military installation of Naval Support Activity Bethesda, sharing space with the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. This proximity provides students with access to top-tier medical facilities and opportunities for hands-on clinical experience. The university also manages a targeted portfolio of high-impact military health research through its interdisciplinary centers and department-based programs, spanning scientific endeavors from molecular biology to global health.
