About the School
The University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) College of Medicine, established in 1850, is the oldest public medical school in Tennessee. Accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME), it offers a Doctor of Medicine (MD) program and is a member of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC). The college operates across four campuses: Memphis, Knoxville, Chattanooga, and Nashville, with the Memphis campus serving as the primary location. It comprises 27 departments in Memphis, nine in Knoxville, ten in Chattanooga, and one in Nashville. The college's mission is to improve health through education, research, clinical care, and public service.
Curriculum
The MD curriculum at UTHSC College of Medicine spans four years, with the first two years focused on foundational medical sciences and the latter two dedicated to clinical training. Students begin their education on the Memphis campus and, during clinical rotations, have opportunities to train across all four campuses. The college also offers a Physician Assistant program, accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA).
Applicants interested in the accelerated program must be accepted first into UTHSC CoM traditional 4-year program, through the College’s standard admissions process. After acceptance, applicants will be invited to submit a secondary written application for the 3-year curriculum. If eligible, they will be invited for an interview by the 3-year curriculum leadership committee and the residency program of interest. Specialties include Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Med-Peds, Neurology, Pediatrics, Pediatric Neurology, Psychiatry.

Facilities
UTHSC College of Medicine boasts state-of-the-art facilities, including the Center for Healthcare Improvement and Simulation (CHIPS), a 45,000-square-foot simulation center designed for healthcare education. The college is affiliated with several teaching hospitals, such as Regional One Health, Le Bonheur Children's Hospital, and the Memphis VA Medical Center. Additionally, the college's clinical enterprise includes multiple physician practice groups, including University Le Bonheur Physicians Specialists (ULPS), UT Regional One Physicians (UTROP), and University Clinical Health (UCH).
Demographics
As of 2025, the UTHSC College of Medicine has approximately 656 medical students and over 1,200 residents and fellows across more than 100 ACGME-accredited training programs.
