School Info

The University of Utah School of Medicine is responsible for the predoctoral, graduate, and continuing education of physicians; the graduate and postdoctoral education of biomedical scientists; and the training of certain other health professionals. In determining the size and types of its educational programs, the school is guided primarily by the needs of the State of Utah. The school is also guided by the imperatives of affirmative action and by the needs of the surrounding states which lack their own medical schools. In addition, the school emphasizes high quality programs that address national priorities, such as the need for generalist and academic physicians, rural practitioners, basic biomedical scientists, and selected medical subspecialists.

Curriculum

Problem-based learning sessions are utilized in many of the basic science courses. Many courses have developed innovative web-based learning tools. Also, standardized patients are used to further clinical skills. The curriculum committees evaluate and recommend changes continuously to improve courses and the educational structures.

Facilities

As a regional, tertiary medical center, the University of Utah Hospitals & Clinics provide specialized patient care in a variety of areas, such as the Intermountain Burn Unit, the Intermountain Newborn Intensive Care Unit, Artificial Organs, etc.. University Heralth Care has been named among America`s best hospitals for the 12th time and recognized among the top providers in cancer care and orthodpedics. The Fourth Street Clinic, which provides comprehensive health care to homeless families and individuals, is a program of Wasatch Homeless Health Care, Inc. Students may volunteer at the clinic through a program coordinated by the Department of Family Paractice. The University of Utah School of Medicine has developed programs to meet the needs of our students and the residents of Utah. The school is dedicated to updating and improving those programs as necessary.

What are your suggestions for the admissions office?

"If someone is not even close to being on the accepted list please let them know sooner than later. This is one of the biggest flaws I see with Utah is their lack of transparency and openness. It seems like they send out a giant batch of rejections all at once in March. Why can you not let those applicants know sooner that they have not been accepted? Besides that, I think Utah is an awesome school." More from this Member | Report Response

"Worst application process in the entire field. First, you have to reformat your entire primary application because their secondary is essentially the exact same but with less characters. Then, once you are invited for an interview, you must first complete an online interview and essay. Then on the interview day, (besides the fact that there's no parking and I got a ticket from their campus police) they ask you to complete their own situational judgement test (instead of accepting the CASPer like everyone else). And finally they have you do 8 MMI stations which is more than any other school had. The best part is, even if they are sure that they will reject you, you will not be rejected or waitlisted until mid-March. I waited around for 8 months post-interview to finally hear back from them. It left such a bad taste in my mouth. If you don't desperately want to attend school here, DON'T apply." More from this Member | Report Response

"Let people know as early as possible if they are rejected!" More from this Member | Report Response

"Instead of using a "request this date and we'll call to confirm" system for interview scheduling, it would be nicer to have "pick from these available dates" -- only because I was twiddling my thumbs about booking travel while I was waiting for a confirmation of my interview date." More from this Member | Report Response

"Send out post-interview rejections fairly quickly to those that historically have absolutely no chance of being selected." More from this Member | Report Response

"The whole process went smoothly." More from this Member | Report Response

"The interview day should be less waiting around and more active participation by either current students or faculty. Sitting in the Starbucks for an hour was not the best use of my time at the school, and a self-guided tour is not a great way to impress applicants." More from this Member | Report Response

"I'm amending my previous comments. For those who are considering coming here and don't know this already, this school recently changed their curriculum from the traditional 2 and 2 format (2 years preclinical/2 years clinical) to an accelerated format where there is 1 year preclinical and 3 years clinical. I think it may have been a response to Step 1 becoming pass/fail but I'm not completely sure. I would advise you to think very carefully about this before you decide to apply to this school. The 1 year preclinical format means you are learning all of the foundational knowledge twice as fast as you would normally learn it. This may or may not seem like a positive to you right now, but if you do come here you will learn very quickly what your gaps are. And you will have gaps. I have had to accept that there are many things I thought I would learn in medical school that I will never learn. The main example I would bring up is anatomy. The school basically hasn't taught us any anatomy. I think they might not realize how deficient we are in this area because most of my classmates took anatomy in undergrad and many were anatomy TA's, so I think it is giving our instructors the false impression that they are covering it adequately. We have been in anatomy lab two times total in the 6 months I have been in medical school. I legitimately have no idea what I'm going to do when I start surgery rotations in clinical years (which will start in ~8 months from now). I think the instructors may have legitimately been trying to create something good for us when they implemented this change, but I think it has become clear that they have no idea what they are doing. I think they would probably have been fine if we had stuck to a traditional format, but I think they are not prepared to teach an accelerated program. I think they should have done more research before they made such drastic change. I think they should have consulted with other schools that have done this type of change before but they didn't. I think they just didn't really care that much. I think this program could legitimately turn into something good when they have had at least ~5 years to iron out the kinks, but as of 2024 I would advise you to stay away from this school. The school is basically performing an experiment on us that wasn't really thought through and the cost is our medical education. I would not pay the 300k+ price tag knowing what I know now because this is not the value I am getting from this school." | Report Response

About the LizzyM Score

LizzyM, SDN Moderator and medical school admissions committee member, is the inventor of the LizzyM Score. The score allows you to see if you are a competitive applicant at a given school. If your LizzyM Score is far below or above the average, you may not be a good fit. If your score is far below, your application may be screened out due to numerical cutoffs. If it is far above, the school may assume they are your “safety” school and that you won’t attend if they offer an acceptance. This score should be used only as a guide to help you select schools and is not a guarantee of acceptance at any school. If you use this as your sole criteria to select medical schools to apply to, you don’t deserve to get in anyway.
