Dude..Bard is gonna be sweet..except for the fact that there is no kitchen...but I will just take a mini fridge and microwave and I'll be set :)

It will be great living with all the same people who will be going through hell with you. I am excited to see it start...But LA would be preferable..oh well...

WHERE THE HELL IS MORNINGLIGHT?!??!?! Anyone seen her?????

Hey Scooby. I'll be with you in Bard on the 5th floor.

I'm in Bard on the fourth floor. It's an all chicks floor and I'm happy with that. I have two teenage brothers and if I sit on a wet toilet seat one more morning, I'll need to be committed. I don't think I was even given the option of living in the Towers. Hmm, maybe cause I got in late?

If any one is thinking about living off campus...pm me and you can use my alumni account to use the columbia real estate company (on-line), however, I have to admit, I have not been having much luck (although I am looking for a place that can house a dog)

If $$ was no object (or, less of an object), I would live -- if I was going to P&S -- in columbus circle; it's just an easy ride on the A train away from 168th. That or somewhere in Chelsea (which isn't that bad by NYC standards, rent-wise) so you can be near the Whole Foods on 24th and 7th aves -- the best supermarket in the country! (okay, so I am a supermarket junkie, but they have great sushi that's pretty reasonable there).

Keep one thing in mind though people when you're thinking about living downtown (which, I am absolutely a fan of -- Washington heights is obviously not the epitome of things Manhattan). Remember that for your 3rd year, when you have to be at the hospital a** early, the express trains all run local before 6:30am!!! Which, obviously means you have to rise even earlier to make it to P&S.

That being said, there certainly are advantages to living in Bard (economic savings being the obvious one, social reasons being the other), but I know tons of P&S students (my cousin, whom I am very close with just graduated and I spent a lot of time with his med school friends) who lived off campus (and FAR off campus) and did NOT feel like it really hampered their socialization with the class.

Money issues aside, there are TREMENDOUS advantages to living downtown -- I mean how nice would it be to be able to leave the 1 mile ring around P&S when you go home -- spending all of your time in such a confined area (esp. when it's 168th street) is seriously depressing.

Live off-campus if possible! Even your 1st year!

(my impassioned plea to take advantage of the greatest city on the planet!). . . :)

Bard hall- 9th floor.... Is the 19th the first day we can move in?? I thought classes started on the 19th....

I think classes actually start the next week. I found this link to the upcoming academic calendar today when I was trying to figure out when the white coat ceremony was:
<a href="http://cpmcnet.columbia.edu/dept/ps/affairs/acacal.html" target="_blank">http://cpmcnet.columbia.edu/dept/ps/affairs/acacal.html</a>

My friend also called this morning and found out that if you ask, you can move in 2 days early. Just call the housing office.

adding to this thread a bit late...

i'l be on the 7th floor... pretty sure that's the all guys floor...

I'll be going to Columbia and living in an apartment off-campus on 75th and Broadway. The area around there is AMAZING!

It's in a great area, but it's a pretty small apartment. you may have to sit on my lap.

move in (8/19) is a week before classes start (8/26). in addition to the white coat ceremony, there are a bunch of random orientation activities that first week. this is disturbingly like freshman year of college. but i guess i'm looking forward to it :)

i think bard will be fun too. gross, but fun. i was in washington heights the other day and had a really nice time. the sun was setting and the entire neighborhood was glowing. physically, it's one of the most beautiful places in manhattan. it's not the most swinging place to be, but the community is vibrant and interesting and happy. people give a lot of lip-service to the idea of the altruistic side of medicine. i think it's appropriate that we not put ourselves on a pedestal.... it's not like washington heights is beneath us in some way. i, for one, have a personal worth of -200K. why not live there?

Alice, I agree. I think that it would be great to live in Washington Heights.

I'm one half of a couple, however, and my other half has to go all the way downtown to the World Financial Center for work everyday. The upper west side is our geographical compromise.

I actually wanted to live off campus, but did get into the towers so I would be a fool not to take it...after talking to many residents who graduated they all said to live downtown for at least a year or 2 (although they did say bard sucked but a memory they wouldn't forget....)

I don't think the area is any way above us....I can't even afford to live there...and harlem is now out of my price range too!!

24th floor! Have to have a good party to break it in right...do you think they would get mad if I could hang a BBQ off the window?

I won't be going to P&S, but I figured that I would share my experience living in Washington Heights this past year. I am wrapping up a graduate degree at the Institute of Human Nutrition, which is located within P&S. I chose to live off-campus with my girlfriend who goes to Teacher's College (also Columbia, but on 120th). We live in a nice building on 177th and Pinhurst (right off Fort Washington, which is the road that runs between 'the black building' and the library. We love it here. There is a park where a million kids play everyday between 176th and 174th that is cool to chill in. It is a quite neighborhood (for NYC) and has a great sense of community. We live about three blocks from the footpath entrance to the George Washington bridge, so we often walk over it (or she runs over it when she goes running). There is a decent supermarket that just opened up on 170thish and broadway too. There's a great wine/liquor store on 181st too. The neighborhood is safe. You'll get some safety meeting at some point during your orientation week where you'll learn how cracked out washington heights was back in the 80s and early 90s. it is sooo much better now. We often walk home around midnight or later. Have never had the slightest problem. It isn't the party neighborhood at all, and this may be its only down point..but I actually like living in a neighborhood that feels like a community. We have gotten to know many families in our building (pretty much the entire building is Dominican) and have been able to brush up on our spanish. When we want to go out and have some fun - we just hop on the A and in 22 minutes you are at Penn Station or if you stay on you'll be at 14th in about 25. It really isn't that bad at all. So, I guess I'm sharing this to ease your minds about Washington Heights, if you are not at ease. Bard is an old school dorm, but your classmates and friends will liven the place up. Couple of my friends live in the Towers and they are sweet. Really nice views of the Hudson and GW. All in all, I am really glad I've lived here.

You can find off campus rooms available from 500 to 1000 bucks/mo. - depending on what you are looking for. Our place is huge - we have a room in a two bedroom apartment that is really large (our room is really big as well) and pay 900 between the two of us.

Peace.
