Moving???

Anyone else facing a big long-distance move to go to med school. I'm personally going from CA to OH. Anyone given any thought to how you're gonna pull this off?

Well if I ever get into medical-

I live in NY. I am waitlisted at NJ....that's next door so moving would be no problem. Except that the school has no dorms so I would have to go there every weekend or so to find a place.

However I am also looking at a school in DC. That's about 5-6 hours away by car. I would have to rent those moving Uhaul trucks.

Since you are going cross-country, I really don't know what to say. I don't know anyone who ever did it. I guess you have to rent those trucks and pray that they deliver your stuff safely.

Whatever you do MAKE SURE TO INSURE YOUR ****. You can't trust these moving people.

Actually, I'm hoping I have this problem cuz it will mean that I'm going to med school next year! It will be a California to east coast move though

my boyfriend and i moved from florida to indiana this past year for his start in med school (about a 16-hour drive going as fast as we could in a moving van). we rented a medium-sized one, i can't remember how big, 12 feet or so i think, and packed it ourselves with all our furniture and other belongings. took about two or three days to get everything in boxes, all morning to get everything in the van (we used rope to tie everything down - it looked like spiderman was hiding somewhere in there), and two days to drive it. i think it cost somewhere between $250 and $350-ish to drive it that far one-way. and nothing got broken as far as i recall. good luck!

Just buy everything there! That's basically what I did when I moved to my undergrad in MA from FL. I had my new printer and TV shipped from the store, and I bought most of the stuff when I got there (sheets, microwave, shelves, pillows, etc.) If you already have everything, I guess you need a moving company if you don't want to move it yourself.

i think it depends on how much stuff you have. we had a bunch of really nice furniture, linens, dishes, etc. from our parents and grandparents, not to mention our two large dogs. but if you're coming straight out of a dorm room, it would probably be a lot easier to just fly or drive with your clothes and personal belongings.

I moved from CA to washington, DC for this year to do an internship, and now I'm gonna stay in this area for med school. I actually thought it was really exciting, but I have a pickup truck, so it was probably a little different (easier) for me. I just packed up my truck and did the drive with my girlfriend, staying at random campsites, and calling up family in a couple cites. driving cross-country can really be a great time if you've got the right company and you take the time to do some cool things along the way (or get it on in random places :wink: ).

Hopefully, I will be moving from Texas to Syracuse in the fall. Im saving up my ducats for my prospective long haul. I should have about 4,000 grand by the end of july, so in case I get in I'll be prepared.

wow $250-$350 for a 16 hour drive??? does ne1 know how much it would take to rent a u-haul going from berkeley to southern cali... i guess i should just call u-haul

i only have 3 pieces of furniture, maybe i should just sell them.

I'm moving baltimore -> chicago this summer. It's about a 12-13 hr drive. My girlfriend and I are either gonna rent a uhaul and tow my VW golf behind it or put a tow hitch on the golf and tow a little uhaul trailer behind it. costs were like 380 for the uhaul towing car, and 300 for tow hitch installation (permanent, 200) plus renting the little uhaul trailer (100). We don't have THAT much stuff, but a couple of pieces of furnatire we'd like to keep.

From this you can decide whether it's worth bringing big furniture and such, or whether it would be less expensive to abandon it and buy stuff in your new city.

I'm moving from AZ to VA, about 2200 miles. It would have cost me about 1400 for a mover. So I sold all my fuirniture for about 1000, and I'll buy new stuff when I drive out there. I can definitely do it with the 2400 I made/saved.

I was actually thinking of moving by plane. Am I naive to think that I can fit all my belongings into a few large suitcases? Clothes, personables, that's about it. Furniture, even a PC, that can be bought at the new place.

I just got a quote for a uhaul truck on their website. From Denver to Boston (8 days, 2300 miles) they said it was $1400!!! Plus another 200-350 for the car tow. <img border="0" alt="[Wowie]" title="" src="graemlins/wowie.gif" /> So, I think I'm just going to hire a team of llamas and start moving next week. They might spit on my couch, sound system, and mattress, but I think I can save a few bucks.

You'd be surprised how much $ you can make from your present belongings. You might not be able to go out and buy new stuff that replaces everything you sold, but you should be able to buy some new stuff that is pretty dope, which will make it more like a fresh start.

My cousin, who is in his 2nd year of residency at Mt. Sinai, moved from CA to NY with nothing except a bag of clothes. He now lives in an apartment with one 27" TV, a mattress, a desk, and a chair. He said that is all you really need. Oh! A month ago he had in his possession on Sony PlayStation II, but has since given it to my other cousin, who is 13 years old.

I am considering the move from CA to Pittsburgh and not sure what to bring along in my little Honda Civic sedan. The items that I will definitely bring along are my photography gear, clothes, computer (for SDN forums!!), and my body. Other than that, I am not sure what else to bring. I wonder how much it would cost totally to move and get set up in a new place? $2000? $3000? any idea?

i guess i'm lucky that either of the schools i'm going to are within a 1-1.5 hr drive from my home in so.cali. i just have to figure how to move my stuff from berkeley to home. starting to think i will sell. have you guys heard of craiglist? supposedly very good for selling/buying furniture

The move from Boston to St. Louis is going to be a beotch. I love my big bed and my couch and dresser, so I think I am going to want to hang on to them. I am looking at the rent a U-haul thingy here so that is going to hurt the pocket book a little. I just own too much stuff I don't want to part with: three bikes, lacrosse stuff, some good kitchen cutlery (Wustoff, baby!) all my many, many, many,many CDs. Getting rid of any of that stuff would be like selling a family member. If I were to sell that stuff and repurchase in St. Louis it would cost more than I can imagine

MonkeyRunner-I will be going to Cincinnati from Utah (it's a hella drive) me ex used to live there and she said from SLC to Cinci is a good 3.5 to 4 day drive. Are you doing the prematriculation program? Looked into housing? if I am in SLC and you need a place to crash email me and you can chill with us in SLC.

WOW! you guys have no idea how happy i was to read this thread. after my excitement about getting into med school, i'd become kind of a stranger to sdn. recently, i've been literally FREAKING OUT about how to deal with this move, and it was so encouraging to see that lots of you are dealing with similar issues.

so here's my question, maybe someone can help me out. you all have been so good helping with decision-making before.

i'm moving home for the summer from my current non-home location, then going to school in the fall. i've found out that public storage can pick up, store and drop off again my stuff for the bargain price of $800. it's not a horrible deal because i couldn't really store the stuff at home, and two long-distance uhaul rentals comes to about 500$. i have a bed, bureau, bookshelf but not a lot of living-room furniture or anything. i'm moving into a dorm room. yes, it's a horrifying thought to me too, but i got into my dream school, so i'm sucking the bad living situation up...anyway, i digress. here's the question: should i try to sell my few belongings - don't think i could get very much $$ for them - and buy a new bed at school (putting foot down about single dorm room bed), or should i suck up the $800 to not have to go shopping/deal with moving my other stuff. (mini-fridge, etc.) myself.??

those of you who aren't living in places that involve mini-fridges next year, I ENVY YOU! am finally realizing how different life is going to be once med school starts. (different thread altogether.... ) i've been out of school a while.

why not try other moving companies like starving students or the car rental companies that do it now. or hit up your parents to use their van or truck. those are my plans!

I wanted to revive this topic again since I'm in the same situation as everybody else. I'm just picturing myself arriving at the airport with my 2 carry-ons and 2 check-in luggages, and calling a taxi to take me in the middle of the night to my apartment I've never seen, and has no furniture whatsoever in it. Are there even lights? Where do I sleep? Will I just wear my entire wardrobe at night to keep warm?

Then the next day... I've got no car, but I still gotta go buy everything to furnish my apartment! What am I going to buy? What if I only have a ten month lease... what do I do with all the junk I buy when I go home for the summer? Does Papa John's have the Buy One Get One Free Pizza deal over there also?!?!? GOOD LORD!

I just wanted to add in how I am moving my junk from boston back to FL when I graduate in May. My whole family (6 people total) will each buy 3 duffle bags and carry the junk back in those on an AIRPLANE! there ya go! Stuff that I can't put in a duffle bag will be shipped. Then again, i don't have any furniture, just a LOT of junk. Hope it works out.

Try Amtrak, they have a great package express service (there are size and weight limits though). You have to be shipping from/to one of their stations, but it's cheaper than UPS and perhaps even U-Haul if you can leave your furniture behind.

Does anyone want to get help with moving to other cities? I know that I have been in Cincinnati for a total of 6 hours, and now I am supposed to go there, find a house/apt., and figure everything out.

We could start a thread that would list who is from what city and then people could contact each other if they had questions about that city (ie bad parts of town, cheap hotels near the school, good info on apts, etc.)

I'll start and if anyone is from Cinci let me know

check out <a href="http://www.helpumove.com." target="_blank">www.helpumove.com.</a> you load your stuff into a semi and they haul it to wherever you're going. it seems to be quite a bit cheaper than uhaul plus more convenient.
