State of residence or country of citizenship (if non-US): Massachusetts

Ethnicity and/or race: ORM male

Undergraduate institution or category: T50 Liberal Arts

Clinical experience (volunteer and non-volunteer): 2000 paid hours as an EMT for collegiate EMS service. 250 hours volunteer in the Emergency Dept.

Research experience and productivity: 1200 hours of research. Two summer research internships and work during semesters at school. One summer internship studying molecular biology/immunology. Other research in biogeochemistry and environmental chemistry. No papers. One poster, may or may not get a pub in the next 5 months.

Shadowing experience and specialties represented: 10 hours of shadowing geriatrics. 75 hours shadowing addiction medicine, culminating in a poster presentation (not included in research experience)

Non-clinical volunteering: 350 hours volunteering as mentor and mentor leader with a local elementary school. One-on-one mentor with an elementary school student.

Other extracurricular activities (including athletics, military service, gap year activities, leadership, teaching, etc). One year of division I skiing (skiing is D1 even at D3 schools)(600 hours). Took a gap year before college for skiing. Leadership: Leadership of collegiate EMS service, in charge of purchasing and equipment (500 hours). Tutor (group and individual) for Biochemistry (60 hours, paid)

Anything else not listed you think might be important: Founding president of Pre-Health mentorship program. Matches students with a one-on-one mentor who is an alumnus of my undergraduate institute who is now in medical school, residency, and beyond. Designed for students who do not know a physician/medical student and will benefit from one-on-one mentorship. (500 hours)

You should accumulate 150+ hours of non clinical volunteering not related to teaching (such as food bank, homeless shelter, etc) before you submit your application. Remove Rush and Loyola since they are looking for applicants with many hundreds or thousands of hours of non clinical volunteering. You should receive several interviews from the other schools on your list.

Thank you! Would you not consider my mentorship of an elementary school student and associated leadership to be non clinical volunteering? It’s not teaching, but just being a positive presence for kids that need another consistent figure in their life. Appreciate your input!

It is not the non clinical volunteering that medical schools are looking for.
