    Interesting case for residents...

I agree with the above. I also didn't understand the several objections to art line placement in this case - are people objecting to awake art line placement, art line placement in general, or art line before NIBP measurement? I guess I'm more surprised that it seems like several posters would...

    Houston Job Market

Austin is easier in some ways than Houston. You can still find partnership track offers in Austin, especially if you are persistent, or have something specific to offer. That doesn't exist in Houston right now. Houston is easier in Austin in some ways, in that yes, you can get a job in Houston -...

    Houston Job Market

Not as tight as Houston. Can still find partner tracks.

    Houston Job Market

I think you've answered your own questions. Houston market is tight. No one is offering a traditional partner track right now. North Houston package is comparable to GHA - similar base, extra for call, etc. Women's group just sold to Mednax. If you want partnership, look outside of Houston.

    placenta previa

It seems like a reasonable thought process and subsequent plan. I would press the patient and the OB for a more quantifiable amount of blood - are we talking multiple soaked pads in an hour or is it more like a low but steady trickle. From your description, it sounds like they felt that it was...

OB case, massive blood loss: thoughts?

Look up the relevant chapter in Chestnut - there is an associated risk of hemorrhage with molar pregnancies, and according to the literature, up to 30-40% of patients may require transfusion. I've had two molar D&Cs that have exceeded 1 L EBL. I think it's reasonable for both the OB and the...

OB case, massive blood loss: thoughts?

SOAP guidelines are to redose antibiotics in accretas after 1500 cc EBL, or after 2-3 hrs in the case. They just talked about this again at the recent meeting in Puerto Rico. To the OP - on the OB side, I'm absolutely floored that they didn't seem to seriously consider the possibility of an...

    Oral board

If you got through the grab bags, you probably passed. My experience was similar to Yo Gabba's. I even had to argue for a minute with the examiner who was doing the eye-rolling and sighing over whether or not I said fentanyl or sufentanil at one point. It was bad. I still passed. You will pass.

    Most Overused Words in Medicine

"satting" "sats" "tachy" "Thank you for this interesting/fascinating consult." "Patient is a low/medium cardiac risk for surgery."

Does a nontrad background help in anesthesia?

You should be able to get a good number of interviews with those stats, especially if you apply widely. I think the nontrad background that you are referencing is really neither here nor there - it won't exclude you from interviews, but it probably won't be seen as an additional selling point...

Anesthesiology vs OBGYN vs ? Lifestyle/Salary/etc...

EtherBunny gave you some great advice already. For what it's worth, I actually started out in OB/gyn and switched into anesthesiology during residency. I'm absolutely glad I made the switch, although I did second guess myself for the first couple of years after the switch. I love both fields...

    Oral boards for dummies

Excellent point. I also know several people who have not passed the exam, and nearly all of those went to at least one Ho course. Not saying it's a problem with the course, but I think some people might get a false sense of security from it - like, I did the course, I must be in good shape. You...

    Oral boards for dummies

One other thing that I forgot to mention - when practicing, constantly think about the other anesthetic techniques you could do for a case, and be able to verbalize WHY you won't use certain techniques. They'll ask you about cases that you would normally always do under general, about doing it...

    Oral boards for dummies

I had a very similar experience to the above, except that was my first room; the second room was fine, and very much what I expected based on my preparation. In all my meetings with faculty from my residency program, and another nearby residency program, faculty who are board examiners, the...

Just took oral board exam: Holy $@&!

I have to say, getting the pass is the best feeling in the world. This was even better than when my husband proposed.
