About the School

Montclair State University offers a Doctor of Audiology (AuD) program, the only one of its kind in New Jersey and among approximately 75 nationwide. This full-time, four-year program is designed to prepare students for clinical practice in various settings, including hospitals, community clinics, rehabilitation centers, schools, and private practices. The program is accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation (CAA) in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.

Curriculum

The AuD curriculum encompasses a minimum of 118 semester credit hours, comprising 77 academic core credits, 26 clinical practicum credits, 2 online grand rounds credits, and 6 directed research credits. Students engage in a series of clinical externships at the Montclair State University Center for Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology, as well as at various sites in the New Jersey-New York area, including hospitals, schools for the deaf, and private practices. The program culminates in a nine-month, full-time clinical externship during the fourth year.

Facilities

The Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders is located at 1515 Broad Street, Bloomfield, NJ, approximately two miles from the main campus. This state-of-the-art facility includes seminar and conference rooms, research and clinical teaching laboratories, an audiology clinic, a hearing aid dispensary, a program-specific library, and faculty and staff offices. The facility is equipped with advanced technology, including the only Virtual Reality Balance training system in an AuD program, providing students with hands-on experience in a cutting-edge environment.

Demographics

Each cohort in the AuD program consists of approximately 12 to 14 students, fostering a close-knit learning environment. The program attracts applicants from diverse academic backgrounds, including those with and without prior experience in communication sciences and disorders. Preference for admission is given to applicants with a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Graduates are prepared to meet the requirements for national certification and New Jersey state licensure, equipping them to deliver essential clinical services across various settings.
