About the School
The University of Maryland's Doctoral Program in Clinical Audiology (CAUD) is a comprehensive, academically based, and clinically oriented program designed to prepare professional audiologists. The program offers two tracks: the Doctor of Audiology (Au.D.) degree and a dual-degree option combining the Au.D. with a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.). Both tracks exceed the academic and clinical practicum requirements for the Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) granted by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) and satisfy the requirements for Board Certification in Audiology by the American Board of Audiology (ABA).
Curriculum
The Au.D. track requires 93 credit hours, encompassing 57 hours of graduate coursework, 4 credit hours for a capstone research project, 14 credit hours of clinical practicum, and 18 credit hours of full-time clinical internship. The dual-degree Au.D./Ph.D. track entails 110 credit hours, including 60 hours of graduate coursework, 6 credit hours of pre-candidacy research, 12 credit hours of dissertation research, 14 credit hours of clinical practicum, and 18 credit hours of full-time clinical internship. Both tracks are designed to be completed in four years for the Au.D. and approximately six years for the dual-degree, respectively.
Facilities
The Department of Hearing and Speech Sciences boasts state-of-the-art facilities, including modern research laboratories equipped for studies in acoustic phonetics, psychoacoustics, cochlear implants, hearing aids, and auditory electrophysiology. The on-site Hearing and Speech Clinic serves as the initial practicum site, featuring multiple audiological test suites, a complete hearing aid dispensary, and a group rehabilitation room. Students also have access to the Audiology Service at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore for clinical rotations and externships.
