Undergraduate Medical Accelerator Program

The Undergraduate Medical Accelerator Program (UMAP) was designed as a half-day seminar helping community college students understand medical school admission requirements, prerequisite planning, and extracurricular preparation. The pilot combined presentations with a resource roundup connecting students with admissions professionals, medical students, and community-college resources.

2022 pilot

SDN worked with the University of Oklahoma-Tulsa School of Community Medicine and Tulsa Community College on a hybrid pilot held April 23, 2022. Twelve community college students attended, and nine completed both the pre-program and post-program surveys.

• Confidence in successfully applying to medical school: 3.7 before the program and 4.3 after
• Knowledge of the medical school admissions process: 2.8 before and 4.5 after
• Preparedness to apply to medical school: 2.2 before and 4.0 after

Scores used a five-point agreement scale. With only nine paired responses, the results are descriptive and too small for statistical inference. Participants nevertheless reported that the seminar clarified the path to medical school and that its planning and resource materials were useful.
