Are you working more than 80 hours?

An interesting point: many residents prefer to work two 120-hour weeks, followed by a fifty-hour week, instead of four 80-hour weeks. This has kept many individuals from reporting programs not in compliance.

    Popular Questions on Interviews

"What should I ask you?"--that one stumped me. "What won't I like about you after I get to know you?"--that one made me mad. "What have you done to distinguish yourself in medical school?" "Why should we take you?" "Why Baltimore?" "So tell me about your five-foot fiberglass fish!"

    80-hour work week in NY?

I'm at a New York school, and the work definitely varied based on the rotation. On medicine, surgery, and ob-gyn, we were told explicitly that "medical students do not fall under the 80-hour work week, and therefore their work hours are not limited," and, boy, was that true. Q3 overnight call on...

    Prelim interviews?

I've been wondering this, too. I applied to ~15 (is this enough?) and have only received 2 prelim interviews to date (Med College of Wisconsin and BU's extension program in Providence, RI). I actually have twice as many radiology interviews as prelim, so I'm a little worried, since I've heard...

    Applications

I've been told by quite a few people that one radiology letter is enough. Medicine and surgery letters are valued much more highly, because these letter-writers are much more aware of your work ethic, your interpersonal skills, etc.(it's hard to demonstrate these in a radiology elective). For...

    Interviews??

Actually, I can validate the AuntMinnie list, after talking to classmates and acquaintances. All the programs on that thread have sent out interviews (the only one I've not heard about in person is Columbia). But I concur, it's too early to worry about anything. Hang in there! We'll all...

    Threat from overseas

The program you cited appears to be in place in order to provide Spanish-speaking physicians/dentists to underserved areas in the United States. Actually, it makes a lot of sense. And, in many ways, it simply increases the pool of physicians already in programs such as the NHSC. In addition, the...

    hear about prelim interviews??

Per one of our academic deans and several of the programs I've applied to, you can call the department for your PGY2 year. Let them know you'll be interviewing for your intern year there on what date, and if they are interested in interviewing you, would it be possible to schedule an interview...

    Best Specialty Lifestyle/Pay

Rads in an academic environment! :) I have NEVER seen attending radiologists in the hospital later than 6 or so. But I HAVE seen (cosmetic) plastic surgeons, ID docs, cardiologists, etc. Besides, technology advances also let you read scans at home...if you have to work, wouldn't you rather...

things you WISH you could have written in your PS

The TRUE things I wish I could have written: 1) I almost quit medical between first and second year. Sometimes I wish I had. 2) I want to be an artist, not a physician. 3) People should tell you what medicine is really like (no time to really get to know your patients, algorithmic, very...

    hear about prelim interviews??

I had the same question myself. One of our academic deans didn't seem to think I'd need one. However, just to double check, I looked at the "application" web pages for the prelim programs I applied to. At least 4 out of the 15 I applied to request Department Chair letters. So I need to...

    good community programs

Hi, Dr. Cuts-- Thanks for your reply. Just wanted to let you know that I've seen your posts on Aunt Minnie, and I deeply appreciate how kind and helpful you are...no flaming from you! The world needs more people like you. :)

    Adts

No, you can't really tell. Some programs don't even start to consider applicants until the Deans Letter comes out Nov 1st. Every program has a different timeline...some download every day, others once a week, others haven't even started yet.
